Most people care what others think because they are not happy with the way that they feel about their selves. The only image that matters is the one that you have of yourself. If you are happy with yourself then most likely everyone else will be too and if they are not then its their issue not yours. You must be happy with yourself before you can make someone else happy!!!!!

I think it's because you want to be accepted, to belong. We're striving for companionship in our lives and with all the bullsh*t advertising and movies throw in our face we've grown up with these pre-conceived notions on how we should look and behave in order to win this acceptance. Just my two cents!
