Doctor? 10 points?!

Question: I'm 15 and want to talk to somebody...without my parents knowing. Depression I'd rather not talk about. How do I see a psychiatrist or something? My family doctor makes me feel uncomfortable, who can I see?

I agree with DJ, your guidance counselor at school has the resources and can lead you in the right direction.

Please be honest with the counselor on what you are feeling and what you need. They should be able to help you. Depending on where you live there may be free clinics as well.

However being that you are a minor, you may not be able to avoid having your parents know about it and you should be prepared for that possibility. Most times seeing a psychiatrist requires payment or insurance and your parent's would be the one's responsible for it.

As an aside, I would suggest that you do talk to your parents about seeing a different family doctor though. It is important to be comfortable with your doctor so that you are able to address any physical problems you may have and that you trust the doctor.

If you live in the US, you can contact the Mental Health Association and they can advocate for you as well or NAMI for help. I have included the links to their websites in the source area. I have also included a link from the Mayo Clinic on Depression, it has a lot of good information including self-care and symptoms

I'm very proud of you that you recognize that you are having problems and looking for solutions. That is the first step in getting the help that you need.

Good luck and many blessings to you.

Michelle

Try talking to your guidance counselor at school. He/she can steer you in the right direction.

Talk to a teacher your close with or try a counsler but either way your parents will find out because the teacher and counsler is obligated to tell your parents so they can give professional help.(Sorry if that sounds bad but i didnt know what else to say.)

Your minister or guidance counselor. Talk to Someone. This is VERY SERIOUS BUSINESS and not to be fooled with. Please seek Help NOW !!!

Talking to your school counselor is free and effective. Either set up some time with them regularly, or get them to recommend you to some one.

About your parents not knowing: all counselors and psychologists are bound by confidentiality. The only way they are allowed to tell anyone, anything, is if they honestly believe you will hurt yourself/attempt suicide in the near future. They are not even allowed to confirm that you go to them if anyone asks.
So don't worry :D

edit: Psychiatry is different, and as someone mentioned, there may be need to get your parents involved because of insurance, etc., but I strongly suggest you stick with a counselor for now. Leave meds as a "last resort" type thing.

Good luck ^-^

try talking to a friend or a close family member. tell them how you feel. sooner or later your parents are going to have to know how you are feeling, which isnt always what we want to here. just tell your doctor you want to see a psychologist and if he/she could recommend you to one.
