Has anyone been to a councilor, GP, therapist??!

Question: I'm not going to go into why but i have in other questions and a lot of responses were people said to go to a councilor or Gp or someone for help. But to be honest im just too scared/embarresed/ashamed about stuff.
I dont know what i would say to start with...especially with a GP. I have a really hard time talking about this type of stuff in person.
I'm scared that they wont know what to say back to me or wont beable to help me.
I can just see myself being lost for words and not being able to get anything out and i'd just look like an idiot.
Also confidentiality...im 17 so would they tell my parents?
If the GP refered me to someone would i HAVE to go? like would they call looking for me if i didnt?
Do you think i could do it without anyone knowing(not friends, family, school etc)
Please help...i have noone else to answer all of this

Hey, I'm 17 too and I've been seeing a therapist for about a year now. It was really hard at first, but I'm glad I did. Yes, your parents would have to sign papers giving permission to treat. They don't have to go with you, but they do have to be aware. I'm not sure what you are dealing with, but I have found that having a couple friends who know what I'm going through has been a great source of support and encouragement. It's hard to say much because I don't know the specifics. If you have any other specific questions, you are more than welcome to im or email me.

no but my friend has

i've been to them before. for sports and all other types of things. if you ask me, they dont really work. they tell the same thing to all people and that might not work for you. it didnt for me

Yes, I went to a therapist when I was 16, (i had gotten into a car accident and one of my friends got hurt, she was okay, but I wasnt sleeping at night and my mom thought it would be a good idea.) I thought that I would never ever talk to the guy, I didnt want to be there and i told him so. He said thats fair enough and started asking me some questions, the next time he asked a few questions designed to get me to open up and each time after I was shocked at how time flew. NO you dont have to go, and teen therapists stress this, he asked me after every session if I wanted to come back we made an appointment each time I went it wasnt like once a week or anything just when I wanted. And I didnt tell any of my friends! If anyone asked I would say I had a dentist appointment, or doctors appointment or was going shopping lol I just wasnt comfortable telling people.

Its okay to need help or even just to talk someone you are unfamilar with. I know it is scary but the first part is just making that step. You don't have to go see some big specialist if you need someone to talk to. You can talk to a priest, a teacher or maybe even a coach. I am sure in most cities (towns) the have places you can go to talk to someone for free. Like groups sessions. Look in your newspaper, yellow pages. Heck even google it. I am sure you will come up with something. Everyone needs someone to talk to about problems and life..we all have them! Best of luck to you! And if you need a friend I am always here.

School Chaplain (caught smoking, forced to "talk about my feelings") but I went to one last year for anxiety issues and unresolved feelings about parent's divorce.

trust me, you will not be lost for words and there is no need to be shy. they wont tell anyone or judge you or anything like that. it makes you feel relieved and a whole lot better to tell someone about what your feeling, who you are and what you've been through, and at least now you can tell someone who isnt some backstabbing 'friend' who will go and tell everyone.

I dont know about referals and the legal side to it, but I reccomend you go. and yes you can go without anyone else knowing, it may be a little harder if you are a reliant on you parents and live at home, but yeah you will manage.

I understand your fear of seeking help...and to be quite honest because of your age your parents would probably have to know that you were seeing a counsellor or therapist. But dont let that discourage you... I have seen a therapist and they are trained for the most part to make you comfortable and ask questions that you feel comfortable answering. Any good therapist doesnt pressure you into talking about things you dont want to. It is scarey going the first few times but it is the biggest relief too. Finally someone that you can reach out to who will keep the things you say to him or her confidential...unless you planning to harm yourself or someone else. Therapy should always be YOUR choice not something that is mandated. If you feel you need it then do it....there is hope in seeking help. Good luck.
