Hello,
You can not always look at someone and notice it. How the person acts you may....
My son has his "quirks", his speech can not always be understood (heck I am just happy he is talking!!), he flaps his hands and walks on his toes and pulls at his ears, talks to himself, at the store he starts making everything straight and everything needs to be with the same item, if noises are loud or in a strange place he gets over stimulated and can not deal, he picks his nose (which I am always telling him to stop!!) when stressed.
Though you as a stranger may not notice this unless we are out in public,or you are paying to much attention to my kid (which might get you hurt we are very protective ), or you are a person who we let into our life's (don't hold your breath we are very secluded people). People are very cruel , therefor we do not go out much.
There is the autism scale. the doctor wrote it down for me and let me visually see it on paper and on the computer to help me remember, lets give this a go; ADD/ADHD,Bi Polar, terrets, schizophrinia, depression, seizures, anxiety, oh there are more on this autism scale.....are all symptoms of autism. They do not fully understand it and it is rather a ketch all condition. The degrees are different .There is severe to mild or high functioning.
People with autism do not act all the same. Depends on the degree of autism.....
Hope this helps?

Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behavior, all starting before a child is three years old.
The main characteristics are impairments in social interaction, impairments in communication, restricted interests and repetitive behavior. Other aspects, such as atypical eating,

People with autism have social impairments and often lack the intuition about others that many people take for granted.

About a third to a half of individuals with autism do not develop enough natural speech to meet their daily communication needs.[30] Differences in communication may be present from the first year of life, and may include delayed onset of babbling, unusual gestures, diminished responsiveness, and the desynchronization of vocal patterns with the caregiver. In the second and third years, autistic children have less frequent and less diverse babbling, consonants, words, and word combinations; their gestures are less often integrated with words. Autistic children are less likely to make requests or share experiences, and are more likely to simply repeat others' words
Diagnosis is based on behavior, not cause or mechanism

I think its a repetation of behaivor, a brain disorder of kids or sometime adults may developed with deppression, routins etc. rather than sole genetics. Fine arts and musical thearepy are also affective.

Autism is a severe developmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two-and-a-half years of life. Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviors which are markedly different from those of typical children. Less severe cases may be diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) or with Asperger's Syndrome (these children typically have normal speech, but they have many "autistic" social and behavioral problems).
