Am I completely mad or do you also worry about these horrors?!

Question: It's gotten to the point where I can barely stand seeing people walk around in public. Every-time I see families with children I'm thinking to myself "Are they going to rape and murder their children tonight?" or "Are they going to be abused and tortured?" or "will they fight and shout in their presence" and countless other worries. No-one knows strangers, hence the problem.

I'm constantly worried because nowadays you can never know what is going on in all these communities of strangers who don't even know each others names. Anything can happen behind closed doors. I haven't found an opportunity to fight injustice so I'm thinking about it every moment that my mind is idle. Until I finish my last year of college, there aren't any opportunities. This makes things extremely agonizing. This is getting to be a problem but I haven't found a shrink who knows how to help me with this.

Have you ever experienced this? What do you do to shut the mind down when out in public?

You can't really "shut the mind down", except to dull it with alcohol or anti psychotic drugs. So you have to learn to think about yourself more, not to speculate so much about people. It sounds a very pessimistic attitude, to always think the worst of people. No, you can't always trust strangers to be good, or not to be evil, but you can stop judging them from externals! Have any of them actually gone home and done what you said? Without proof, you are needlessly worrying about other's business. It sounds as though you need someone to love and care for yourself, so you can forget
a) thinking about other people so much
b) concentrate your solicitude on someone who will reciprocate.
I don't shut my mind down in public, but I do spend time on public transport either writing, drawing or reading to keep my mind on "reasoning" lines.

You need professional help. Thoughts like that are not right.

No, I am afraid that my thoughts don't go that far.

You are definitely in need of some counseling. I find it hard to believe no counselor can help you. It sounds like you have an anxiety disorder, and possibly obsessive-compulsive disorder. call a psychologist as soon as possible. although the reaction of worry is normal, this goes beyond that. please get help before you drive yourself crazy!

You have to realize that you cant save the world. You can do your part to make the world a better place and be a productive member of society, but people are people, you cant control them. Its not your responsibility. I think maybe counseling would help you. And maybe stop watching the news for a while. :You re a sensitive person and the media can really mess with your head. Good Luck.

you belong in a m ental hossy im afraid soz but thats what i think

You could put a positive twist on these thoughts by beginning to help a worthy cause. This would help you feel like you were making a difference. Maybe some of your thoughts would be channeled in a positive direction where you would be having an impact on today's society. You could think about volunteering some place that would interest you.
This would be good for your resume.
