Old and new droppings look the same---sorry, guess you'll never really be sure---hope your pest has moved out.

The droppings could have been old.

Just buy several glue traps, and place them all around.

Do not leave any food out. Place in metal or glass containers...or the fridge.

Mice can get through holes as big as a dime. They also chew everything. Steel wool would work. Peanut butter works the best on the traps. They also will stay away from peppermint. I have put that along the woodwork in my house that is where they stay around the borders because they don't see well. This had led them right to the traps. They will go away once the weather stays warm, they cannot survive outside that is why they come inside. Mouse droppings all look the same. I have been having the same problem. Good luck.
