When one is "stuck in a rut" for years, how does one get out?!

Question: pray for the gift of desperation
because when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired
then
you
will
change

There's A Hole In My Sidewalk
Chapter One

I walk down a street and there's a big hole. I don't see it and fall into it. It's dark and hopeless and it takes me a long time to find my way out. It's not my fault !

Chapter Two

I walk down the same street. There's a big hole and I can see it, but I still fall in. It's dark and hopeless and it takes me a long time to get out. It's still not my fault.

Chapter Three

I walk down a street. There's a big hole. I can see it, but I still fall in. It's become a habit. But I keep my eyes open and get out immediately. It is my fault.

Chapter Four

I walk down a street. There's a big hole. And I walk around it.

Chapter Five

I walk down a different street.

A Shovel.

Step One: A desire to change

Just like on the road. You need to go in a different direction for a while.

Decide what things you'll do different, and take one step at a time. At first the heart may not be in it and things feel weird, never mind, keep going. Soon you feel the uplifting sensation of "something new" in your life, in your style.
Best wishes, don't give up.

One must have a family orgy to spice things up... like Nick Felix's Orgialia Familia

yes a very good shovel would help....but mostly you need to realize your wasting each day being stuck in a rut that you could get out of if you just had a little self motivation!

By Choice

Seems to me alot of times they have to hit rock bottom to be forced to go up. Hopefully in your situation that won't have to happen. Good luck and God bless!

a rut is just troubled situation... you're essentially asking "how do I get out of trouble"... that is way too vague to answer.

What are you in a rut with? Money, dating, friends, work?

I've often asked the question: "how does one change?". It's not easy. I found I hated to read, so I just started on paragraph at a time, then a page, then a chapter a night, until it's a habit. It takes 7 weeks to start a habit- good or bad. If you want to change something your doing wrong, replace it with something good. Reward yourself for resisting something, or for doing something you want to do. Your question was very general.

CHANGE

need to change everything in your life obviously. re-discipline and re-structure. that is the only way. i had to do it, it seems to have worked but like anything else it require time, patience, and perserverance.

First, clear your mind of old beliefs and habits. That also includes routines and most of all, people concepts!!! Then
study yourself in the mirror to give you some idea as to what your next step sould be !! Your not trying to change your outside appearance but your mind and its readings! Any outside changes might come with the new concept of you but don't focus on that aspect!!! You will be surprised what you can do with your imagination if you try hard enough!!!

Take control of ones life. Take in note that not all ruts are bad ruts. Understand the the general emotional and psychological of a man can not change after the age of 50. What the man is at 50 is what he will be when he dies. He can try to change but will be unable to. It has been pyschological proved. A woman can change her entire life. But then again, she changes her mind all the time, she has practice. In order to get out of a bad rut you must imply yourself based on a theory. The theory is based upon the meaning of insanity. The true meaning of insanity is to continue to doing the same things with negative results. And also ask yourself if you want to continue to be insane. That should give you the proper drive to create change in yourself. You will realize then that you have to change and possibly feel a sense of urgency. Good Luck!

Usually, one doesn't. That said, some people actually do - so there is hope!! Don't make the mistake of looking around and making a list, mental or otherwise of all the things in your life that are going wrong, leading to a pile of things you DON'T want to do any more: it is far more productive to decide what you actually want to achieve in life, and then start doing things that will help you get there. In other words, let the positive, productive, goal-oriented things crowd out and eventually replace the stuff that got you into that rut in the first place. Placing the emphasis on the positive, can work a lot better than just looking around, seeing only the walls of your rut(s) and wondering how to escape!! It has to be on a "moment by moment" basis, however: like one of the earlier responders said, it might be pretty tough at first - but once you start to see RESULTS, things will get a LOT easier, believe me!!

Decide if you're needing a complete life overhaul of your life, or just to spice it up a little. Do you like your job, but you're tired of the daily grind? Maybe take up something a little exciting, like learning to ride a motorcycle.

Hate your job, but love your personal life? Take stock of your talents and ambitions, and consider changing careers. Research training programs and funding options, and make sure to talk to who ever else will be affected by this decision (aka your spouse).

Figure out what inspires you to get moving, research what your obstacles will be, and make a plan to overcome those obstacles. Then just get moving.
