Meditation for Impatient People?!

Question: I've tried meditation, but it doesn't really work for me. I'm not a very patient person- I find it boring and difficult to clear my mind and the classical tinkly music that is traditionally played makes me want to break something.

So tell me, are there any more exciting alternatives to meditation? Ideally, I'm looking for something like Meditation for Punks- some kind of breathing/meditation exercises that won't put me to sleep and will still help me feel more grounded and focuses.

Any ideas?

I do not think meditation will help. I think you need physical stuff to learn patience. Try a class in karate. Its a very disciplined way to learn patience and relieve stress.

I'm not so impatient, i just have a very busy mind and you have to realize that's not the only way to meditate.

try reading or listening to music you like, but not very fast music, and then close your eyes for a moment and picture this: (if the music distracts you turn it off)
Think of an apple in your mind's eye. See it clearly, hold it in your "hand" and look at it for a moment. Now take a bite. Imagine every detail as you eat the apple, down to the core. Now take one of the seeds from the core and imagine yourself planting it. Watch it grow (in fast-forward) and take an apple from a branch.
Repeat the above as many times as you can. Gradually you will be able to do it more and more. It works for me. Make sure you aren't rushing through it, there's no rush!! Enjoy it and take it slow.
While you do it, breath for 6 counts in and 8 counts out, as slow as you can.

Noras answer is in agreeal with mine. I think you definitely need something a little more physical. I was going to suggest kickboxing but Karate is excellent too. You sound alot like me and I've done both. I tried the whole meditation thing and could not still myself.

Here's another trick. Go for a walk. Look far off into the distance to the horizon and focus on something interesting. Just keep walking, it sounds simple and kinda stupid but there's a bit of challenge to walking and keeping your eyes focused on such a small target. I found that to be a good quik fix when I'm on my way somewhere. I walk everywhere so it's easy. This simple task takes some conscious physical effort and it's the simplicity that should leave your mind empty and give it a chance to relax.

Dancing a sweat works for me too. You may be the type who needs a big workout to relax and wind down. Meditation is definitely not for everybody but once you 'drain' yourself from a hefty workout, then try to meditate, it just might work. Otherwise, don worry bout it. Meditation's spose to be relaxing so if it isn't it isn't.
