Missed work due depression. How to explain it at work? Any tips??!

Question: I'm at home (off the work) for 3 weeks due bad case of depression and anxiety. However, I don't want to tell the real reason to my manager and co-workers. Can you think of diagnosis/condition that takes 3-6 weeks to recover ?

You help is very appreciated. TOmorrow I gotta call my boss.

Hernia?? I don't know.. people really underestimate the depth of depression and how dabilitating it really is. It makes me so angry.. people just assume it's a lame excuse. Good luck, hope you feel better.

you'll be better off working and ask for more frequent breaks for a walk or meds whatever your doctor will write a note for.

Is there no hope of telling him the truth? Most companies today recognize depression as a legitimate illness. But if it is just because you aren't comfortable doing it, maybe a staph infection? I don't know. I would probably tell the truth my friend. You may be surprised at how understanding your boss is.

Several years ago I started having panic attacks - actually quite a few of them. I didn't want to tell my coworkers, boss, etc so I just tried to function as best I could and hope they wouldn't notice. I dropped 15 pounds, had trouble focusing, and finally decided to seek help from my doctor. I was put on zoloft, and was told it would take a week to provide any relief. Well, I decided to come clean to my boss, and I am grateful that I did. He completely supported me, told me to not worry about work, he was confident in my abilities, and he even allowed me some flexibility. There are so many people who suffer with depression and anxiety, and it is nothing to be ashamed of. If you aren't taking meds, and you are not getting better, then you are only hurting yourself. I suggest being honest. You cannot be fired due to a medical condition, and if your employer isn't willing to work with you, please consider another job. I am still taking zoloft, and I feel wonderful.

When I took a leave of absence(twice) at my first employer I just said I had a medical condition. Thats all you really need to say its none of their business anyways.

honesty is the best thing! people do understand believe it or not. i think you should go see your doctor and explain the situation this way you will have a valid excuse.

I lost a job that I loved dearly to depression. If you can keep your job. Then do the best you can to keep it. Good Luck!
