It's a very broad term that implies delayed physical and/or mental development.

It may include mental retardation, learning disorders, autism, communication disorders, delays of physcial growth and physical coordination.

It's a very unspecific term that may cover a lot of different things.

For example, a pediatric neurologist might write "this child has a global developmental delay with mental retardation, autism spectrum disorder and ADHD."

A child could be smaller than average and that might be a sign of a global developmental delay.

There are many treatments depending on the specific problems and severity; physical, speech and occupational therapy, for example.

It's hard to say anything about prognosis without knowing something more specific. Global Developmental could imply something severe like quadriplegic cerebral palsy, or it might just mean an unspecific learning disorder.

I usually don't see that term used with teenagers, more often it's used for infants and very young children (or least in my experience).

This is a new concept for me. Thanks for asking such an interesting question..

It's a really good name for self-imposed stupidity.
