Holiday Depression...?!

Question: How many of you out there get depressed around the hollidays because you have lost too many loved ones? I have lost my Grand Father, My Father when I was 8. I lost my Grand Mother 5 years ago. I have not gotten in the holliday spirit ever since. To this day I can not stand any thing that has to do with the hollidays and I get really depressed. Every one I know loves the hollidays and tries to get me to join in. I have told them my reasons for not being happy. They always tell me to stop looking back and live in the present. I just can't do it. Any suggestions ???

I know the feeling, i really do, its easier said than done, but we try, im gutted too, thought it was just me.

I'm not feelin' this Christmas! For the first time, I'm experiencing holiday depression. I lost my 93 yr old Gramma last Feb and I'm feeling her loss this Christmas. I had put a Christmas tree up after Thanksgiving, but I could not stand looking at it, so I took it down. Why? I'M JUST NOT FEELIN' THIS Christmas. I also had 4 other deaths in my family, back to back. Really sad! Next year I just plan on leaving the Country for Christmas and spending it in Cancun Mexico, by the gorgeous turquoise ocean. The ocean does wonders for me!

Sorry if I offend anyone here. I am a Spiritualist and if you visit your local Spiritualist church (no need to go to a religious service, you will be welcome at any event) you might find some comfort there.
I am also wondering if perhaps you feel guilty about enjoying the holidays when your loved ones have passed over? Why don't you try making up your own way of including them in your day? Perhaps put flowers or candles next to their pictures? 'Talk' to them and share your day with them?
And please, please go to see a grief counsellor.

just remember - your grandparents would never want you to be sad...it would make them sad to see you depressed...so try & think happy memories of them & enjoy yourself a little for their sake - thats what they would want. keep your chin up honey...i know how you feel.

Depression is terrible my dear but i can promise you one thing you nan your grandad your father will be so upset by you they want you to let go remember all the good times you had with them they want you to be happy so give yourself a shake and think of Christmas as a time you can celebrate this wonderful time smile for your lost ones happy Christmas my dear Dave

this sounds really silly but with it being Xmas make a little decoration out of whatever you want and put a photo of your special loved ones on what you have made and hang it on the tree that way you are remembering them and also celebrating too they would have wanted you to look to the future and not the past they are probably up there having a whale of a time in there new found home of peace you know have to make Peace with your loss to and enjoy life yourself like they did! chin up Hun x

It comes down to freedom of choice. I can empathise with you in that between '98 and March this year i lost my entire family. I don't celebrate xmas or my birthday simply because no one can give me what i really want - my daughter Jade. People can say what they want but in the end it boils down to what you decide to do. I'm using my depression in my art, the deeper the depression the better the picture. I wish you the best for the season and hope that you can find a way to deal with it!

I have been using this alternative therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique on my anxiety and depression which has helped me a lot. It's very good at getting rid of all kinds of negative emotions and dealing with all kinds of issues quickly. It does sound crazy but does work. It might be something that can help you. If yout type depression in the first link emofree.com you should find some articles about EFT helping people with depression. Try some of the techniques from the third link.

Talk to the doctor about anti-depressants. There are many of them and they are fairly safe. In the long run, you might consider therapy. If you are religious, that may help.

It is quiet normal.....for some people to get down around this period of time....because of what it reminds you...one thing that can help is to talk about things and memories that make you unhappy...maybe when you talk it out....it will go and then just consider holiday times as an ordinary day...and think how happy you are being healthy...safe and abuse free...think of people who have a significant health problems...think of people who live in a country that every minute are worried about their safety and whether they are going to be killed.....think of people who are being abused, harassed and tortured.....and then you will know that what you have is precocious

You need to follow your heart here. Your loved ones are trying to stay close to guide you and need you to remember what they told you to do. Write down their words and they will free you .

Who says we HAVE to be happy at Christmas. Don't feel under pressure to be happy, some things will NEVER be the same again and that's that.
