Abuse at work - is that ok?!

Question: I know my problem my sound silly to most of you but it make me feel realy bad and I need some advice. I am currently studying and work part-time through an agency.
They put me on a job which required me to be a five star waiteress.
I did let them know that I cant carrry more than two plates ( i know its easy, but i simply can't do that - dont have the balance or something). During my shift I was doing well up to the point when somebody forced me to deal with the tables. I oviesly dropped the cuttlery and came back to busy kitchen where I met one of the snobby, furious managers. He started shouting and abusing me at the front of 30 other staff. I heard things like usless and " my daughter is 3 and can carry more than you". Once he finished his agressive speech I asked him politly weather i could go home - as a result he staretd again.
That was the worst day of my life, I never felt so miserable.
Are they allowed to treat you like that? Can I complain, would it help at all?

That manager was wrong to do that and your agency was wrong to place you in that position, and you need to speak with your staffing manager about the situation. You might have been placed there based on misleading information from the restaurant, this happens often. Are you with a temp agency or was this a permanent hire? You need to let your agency know that you are uncomfortable with the abuse heaped on you. If its a permanent hire, was this guy a shift manager or THE manager? If a shift manager, let his boss know about it. When you speak with the manager, tell exactly what happened, don't make excuses, and let the boss know that if you needed to be disciplined, it should have been done in private, like a professional , five star, place should. If you get nowhere, and it continues, leave the job. There is always another job around and being abused at work is just as bad as at home!

That is nothing compared to bootcamp. I would have a bpyfriend or bigger brother go teach the man respect.

no they are not allowed to treat you like that
just complain to his boss
im sure he will come running with an apology

Did you put it in writing that you was limited in what you could carry? Always put anything like that in writing on your applications. Try talking to the manager and explain that you are doing your best and what would they suggest. Sure you can go over their heads and report them but you are setting yourself up for more unspoken hostility. Maybe waitressing isn't the best job for you and you can find work in another area.

You never have to put up with behaviour like that - consider speak to the agency. Maybe your not cut out to be a waitress start looking for another job where you are appreciated. Good Luck

i would say your boss is a child, and you are not cut out for the job. maybe if you practice your skill though. surely you could get better.

No they cant treat you like that, i would report him, then get yourself another job asap

There is no excuse in the world to speak to anyone, never mind an employee like that.

Further, if he had reason to reprimand you, then he should have called you into an office or quiet corner and spoken to you alone.

His manner is just so unprofessional. I understand that some work environments, i.e. kitchens etc can be pressured and people can act impulsively but as a manager he must be professional and consider peoples feelings.

I would approach him or another manager or HR person and make clear that you are unhappy and that you refuse to be spoken to in this manner, under any circumstances.

Ensure you make it clear also that you have informed them about your inability to carry more than two plates. I am the same, I just can't master it, I know some people can carry 4 or 6, I just can't.

Can they not give you a tray if you need to do this job again??

Talk to someone at the agency and see if they can put you somewhere else. Complaining may not do much, except make you feel better. Unfortunately, in that type of atmosphere you will be subjected to that type of punishment on the carpet. It is not right, but they do it anyway. You either have to stick it out, or find something else.

This is definately not ok for him to do that. Everyone makes mistakes, and you made one, so what. He is getting angry like that because he is relying on his staff too much, he clearly expects you to do far more than you are capable of.

If he is just the manager, then there should be like a 'big boss' who is practically in charge of everyone, even the manager. It mite be worth talking to him about it, explain what's going on. You could also say that if this carrys on I'm going to leave, he mite not like that and he will want you to stay.

Hope this helps. Hope everything works out. Good luck.

Talk to the Agency & ask them to find you another placement.
It doesn't sound as if you and waitressing are suited!

It is NOT acceptable for the manager to abuse you - in front of other staff or not - but sadly, it happens. Busy restaurants & kithchens are fraught places where tempers sometimes surface.

Better luck next time

This shouldnt be happerning but i would jsu do your best if it carrys on then go higher up and tell some one
you can complain and it might help so good luck

speak to your agency and tell them what he said tell them you wont go back if people start refusing to work there the company will have to do something about him. cant the agency find you different work if you cant carry plates its not a good idea for them to keep findin you waiting on jobs they must have something else

The Boss is a pathetic dweeb and shouldn't speak to any of his staff like that. He's the one with the problem and NOT you.

You should try to complain through your agency and ask them not to send you back there.

A lot of agency staff are treated badly and it's a shame.

WOW! That's awful. I'm sure that guy has a huge staff turnover. Are sure you weren't working for Chef Gordon Ramsey of Kitchen Nightmares?? Good luck with everything!

go to a job centre & tell them. ask if you can take it to a tribunal. no one should have to put up with that. diane.

The last boss that yelled at me got his bathroom splattered with crap all over the walls.

the way things are going in the workplace, the managers have to be very careful how they deal with their employees now.
If an employee feels abuse or threatening behaviour in any way shape or form, then he/she has a right to complain, in your case i think you would need to contact the Human resourses department, where they will question you, the manager, witnesses and provide a solution, which could be anything froma telling off to a serious disciplinary.
you should have been given an employee booklet, it will explain how to express your 'greivance'.
