Phobia of Vomiting?!

Question: HI I'm Joel, I have a phobia of vomiting and I have had it since I was 13 (I'm now 18). I hate it because even if I hear the word or someone says they feel like they're going to vomit I get so anxious. I even needed to be sadated once because I had a such a strong feeling that I was going to vomit, and literally couldn't stop shaking! I don't know what I can do I live everyday in fear of this. I have a fair knowledge that vomiting can't hurt you but it scares me more than anything. I don't know what to do, it really is having an impact on my happiness in life. Please help me!!!

Answers: Joel, I COMPLETELY understand where you're coming from! I had the same fear for years. Eventually, it started to affect my life in such a way that I couldn't even leave the house, for fear I'd have to throw up at some point during the day. I finally went to the doctor, and it was determined that I have GAD, or general anxiety disorder, and for some reason it was manifesting itself through a fear of vomiting. I am now on meds for the GAD and my fear no longer rules my life.

Medicine may or may not be the solution for you. Fears are normal and okay, until they start affecting our everyday lives. I encourage you to talk to your doctor and disclose your fears to him or her.

I wish you the best!!
