How can I explain my scars?!

Question: I am a cutter and summer is rolling around - I don't want to hide in jeans during hot weather. I'm not ashamed of my cutting but seeing the scars tends to make other people uncomfortable, and I'm not really sure how to explain myself without being blunt. I can't even say, "Oh, I used to cut myself but I'm better now" to make the situation seem rosier, though, I guess I could lie. Anyway I'm very fair skinned so they show up dark purple, red or pink, mostly on my lower legs right now. I am putting vitamin E and lotion on several times a day but I know only time will dull the appearance. Other cutters, or wise ones, what do you/would you say when concerned friends or annoying strangers ask you about your deep, repetitive scars?

Answers: Hi,
the answer to this question all depends on who your talking to and how comfortable you are with them. If it is somebody you feel comfortable talking to, why no tell them the truth....i know its difficult and if you dont want to go into any details, tell them, followed by..'its a sensitive subject i'd rather not talk about it'.

To be honest, most people know what those types of scars are from so if they are niave enough to ask you, then maybe they will be naive enough to believe that you work in a circus and train lions! Or that you fell through a bush! Or that the boogie man attacked you whilst your were sleeping! Giving an ignorant person an answer like that will always make you giggle inside lol.

If you are still cutting, and feel like you need either help, or just people to talk to that are in the same situation you should join. recoveryourlife.com, trust me there are loads of threads like this, and by the time you've finished reading them you will be an expert on answering that question!

If you ever need someone to talk 2 thats in a similar situation my ryl name is jinxfallenstar, send me a msg.

take care
