What are the benefits and detriments of a bipolar marriage?!

Question: What are the benefits and detriments of a bipolar marriage!?
What are the benefits of marriage for someone with bipolar!? Does it have a significant positive effect on quality of life!? And what are the detriments to the spouse, as shown in psychological surveys, NOT opinions!. Do the benefits to the sick spouse outweigh the detriments to the healthy one!?

I want factual answers - check your rose colored glasses at the door!. And please, no nonsense about "love" either - just FACTS!.

Thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your question is a good one, but unfortunately there are no good research numbers to refer to!. The evidence is anecedotal!. What research data does exist is quite suspect and poorly designed!. Perhaps it is difficult to appropriately manage all the variables!.

That being said the fact that you are asking this question suggests that you have an idea what you may be getting into which is likely to be a benefit to the marriage!. Perhaps that is why nurses who marry patients are slightly more successful at marriage (only slightly), but only if it doesn't deteriorate into a "parent/child" type of relationship!. One key is too continually monitor whether the support offered begins feel like "enabling" or co-dependency!.

Research does indicate that the most successful marriages as defined by satisfaction and duration most often result from a perspective by both spouses, that the marriage exists as a separate entity, greater than either partner, but both must feel that they are benefiting!. In other words, your spouse will not really benefit unless you are alos benefiting!. Defining your role as "caretaker" usually does not work!. But that does not mean that you can't take care of your spouse!. Again, the statistics on marriages, in which one spouse is handicapped are slightly better than average!.

Good luck!.

PS- Didn't realize that you were the one with the bipolar disorder, but my comments still apply!. The fact that you are asking this type of question is a definite plus!. But, it might be better to let your potential partner make their own judgement and come to their own decisions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think if you want real answers you need to talk to the shrink and ask I am sure the spouse or who ever goes go with them and dont be afraid to ask and be honest!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm not going to say anything about love, but bi-polar disorder is a hell of a ride for everyone close to the person!. A spouse is about as close as you get, so it will be up and down all the time, from week to week!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Every marriage has challenges!. The new mate has to understand what bipolar means!. Once you get past that hurdle, it all comes down to love!.
In my case my husband learned a lot about mental illness and became more understanding!. I had support when I needed it and the bad times were always easier!.
I really don't think you can measure it in benefits because every successful marriage is about compromise!.
It can work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

okay!. so, it sounds to me like you are letting your bipolar disorder run your life!. you can't do that!. just go with the flow!. you're probably not going to like hearing that, but you can't keep going with all these "what if's" and scenarios!.

you don't want to isolate yourself just bc you have bipolar!.

i happen to be in a marriage where we are both bipolar!. (don't ask how the hell that happened) but, it did!. and it's tough sometimes!. but, that's the hand that was dealt!. or maybe it's the hand that we chose!.!.!. whatever!. point is, stop thinking too much into it!. it'll drive you mad, you know it as well as i do!. sorry if i came off harsh while ago!. bad morning!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
