Question: Dad is depressed!?
My dad is depressed, and keeps denying it!. He has all the symptoms ( i think) because every single day he says how tired he is, he sleeps alot, gets angry very easily, or just gives up!. He says stuff like "I don't think I'm going to live very long" etc!.!.!.Today he seriosuly looked bad and he said all these hurtful words to me!.
I told him to go get help but he said he would never to to a damn psychiatrist!. How can I help him!?!? It's so hard to talk!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This sounds SO familiar! My husband was diagnosed with depression after many yrs (his drinking did NOT help!)!. After going on Zoloft, he got sober, but after 13 yrs, and at least 3 other antidepressants (Prozac has been the best, but not good enough), is still dealing with the "Manic" stuff (probably bi-polar)!.

In true style, he won't accept it, just like with the alcoholism--he will wait until someone other than ME or our Dr!. tells him he's got it!.!.!.or it gets so out of hand that I leave him!

That's the true pain of living with a loved one who has a mental illness; they almost always deny it because they think it makes them "weak" to admit it (esp!. guys!)!.

Try talking to someone you know well, like a counselor (going to counseling for YOU could help you deal with his illness if he absolutely refuses help)!.

You love him, yes, but that's no reason to put up with his continual abuse!. You BOTH need help! Maybe try going to a family therapist, who, if they're any good, will recognize your dad's illness and nudge him in the right direction!.

You'd be amazed how people close to you will listen to perfect strangers who are saying the same thing YOU did but got shot down !

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

perhaps not a psychiatrist but a gp/family doctor can prescribe for him!.

i wud get help sooner rather than laterWww@Answer-Health@Com

Just try and get him to a doctor!. Tell him there's a lot of flu about and the doctor's got some great new drugs to help him!.

You have to take charge of someone like that but without appearing to dominate him to his face!.

It's a tricky one and you have to outsmart him, double bluff him into getting help!. I've got a husband who is just the same!.

Good luck ;-)Www@Answer-Health@Com
