Here's my Beat-The-Insomnia list!.

1) Meditation!. If this happens a lot, take up meditation!. To hell with that actually, take it up anyway!
Focus on nothing, essentially!. Close your eyes, get in a comfortable position in bed, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth slowly!. If you're having a hard time focusing on specifically nothing, then put all your attention on one single thing - say, uh, kittens!. Just picture a kitten!.

2) Random relaxation exercise: Starting from your toes tense each muscle individually, hold, release!. Or, if you'd rather, just think the phrase "I am relaxing my (calf, toe, bicep, whatever)!.!.!." I know it sounds corny, but it works!. The more muscles you do (focusing on the calf and the thigh separately, rather than just the leg, for example), the more relaxed you'll become!.

3) Write your thoughts and feelings down before you go to bed, or if you're worried somebody will read them, tell 'em to your pet!.

4) Read, paint, etc!., whatever, before bed, *instead* of going on the computer or watching television!. Something about electronics stimulate your brain, suppressing chemicals released that make you tired!.

5) This may sound odd but it helps: keep your eyes open!. Stare at the ceiling!. Soon, your eyelids will fight with you, and start to droop!. Naturally you'll let em, right!? Do the opposite!. For some odd reason, after fighting long enough, I find either I am right to sleep or I finally give up and am unconscious seconds later!.

6) This may not be helpful now, but in the future: exercise not immediately before you go to bed, but maybe half an hour or so before!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dont worry do an all nighter and go to bed realy early the next night!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try to think of nothing when your in bed!.
Relax all your muscles and make sure you are in a position where no muscles are tense at all!.
Dont eat choclatey or sugary food before going to bed!.
Try taking depressants such as alcohol or sleeping tablets!.
Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

take a warm shower before bed , try some sleepy time tea you can bye at any super market, and thats what its called!. dont eat after a certain time lets say 8pm!. go to bed the same time every night and wake up the same time every morning!. i have had insomnia for 4 years and sleep apnea thats what i have to do now!. good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

I use invisionary tactics!. I grew up in the woods and there was a path there and every night when I am trying to sleep I close my eyes and I start walking up the path into the woods and before i know it I am asleep!. Maybe you could do something like that from a familliar place like a walk in a park or something!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Maybe you could go back to bed and try to stay awake!. Paradoxically, this sometimes works!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Trouble is the whole package of using sleeping pills is a myth!. It takes as little as 3 days to become habituated!. From that point on if you try and go without them you sleep less that you did initially!. This convinces you that you can't sleep without them, which is true, but only because they have taught your brain to rely on them to switch off!.

Overall patients on long term sleeping pills sleep on average only 20 minutes more than they did pre-medication and fall asleep only 12 minutes sooner!. Not much of a gain to balanced against a life time time of addiction!.

The trick is never to prescribe them in the first place, GPs with good pharmacological knowledge seldom do!.

In 25 years of GP practice I have confined sleeping pill prescriptions to 3 patient groups!.

1) The terminally ill
2) Patients with psychotic mental illness who require sedation as an adjunct to their other mediation
3) Elderly demented patients in nursing homes!.

Try prayer it works everytime!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
