After reading your question I searched for the answer on google!. A similar question was asked on yahoo answers 3 months ago!. The person who asked the question chose Yaybob's answer as the best!. Below you'll see why!. I hope this helps some because I know my simple "i am sorry" although heartfelt, will bring no relief!.!.!.

"Of course, it is impossible to know for sure what dying from a heroin overdose would be like without actually experiencing it oneself, but what you observe is a peaceful individual dying with none of the usual signs of distress during the period surrounding death!. There is simply the cessation of breathing followed by the cessation of heartbeat with none of the signs of strangulation such as panting, perspiration, grimacing, squirming or flailing!.

Heroin is an opiate, that is, derived from opium, the active ingredient in the opium poppy Papaver somniferum!. It stimulates the mu receptors in the central nervous system which are the natural target of the body's own opioids, the endorphins!. These induce pleasure and reduce pain!. Heroin is one such derivative, as are morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone!. Because of its history and negative reputation, heroin is not used medically!. But it could be!. It is fundamentally no different from any other opiate!.

Opioids are drugs that also activate the mu receptor, but are not derived from opium and are not structurally related!. Meperidine (Demerol) and fentanyl are two such drugs!. Endorphins are also opioids!.

Opioids are used in hospice patients dying of emphysema, pneumonia and other suffocating illnesses to relieve the discomfort of dyspnea, or shortness of breath!. The patients report being comfortable even as they are technically suffocating and becoming bluer!.

So, there is every reason to believe that opioid overdose is a peaceful way to leave this world!.

He prob didn't suffer if it wasn't his first time doing heroin even if he did though it is over and he is not suffering anymore

I am terribly sorry you will be in my prayersWww@Answer-Health@Com

No, I believe he did not suffer such pain!.
This is due to the fact that when the brain is overdosed on a drug, the feeling for pain is pretty much dimished, resulting in the inability to feel pain as well as before, plus, when you overdose on a drug, your body falls asleep, you enter a dream-state and you feel total bliss (Not lieing), people report to have seeing loved ones, etc when overdosing on drugs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am soo sorry! I cannot imagine how hard that must be for you!. But think of it this way, he's in a much much better place then we could ever imagine! And right now he is probably watching over you!. It doesnt matter if he was in pain!. He's not now, and that is what matters!. I hope the best for you!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Maybe your son had some skeletons in his closet that he wasn't able to bring out for you to see!? In other words, maybe he was dealing with a lot of issues he didn't want to tell you about, and heroine was his only escape!. Perhaps he was having a bad night the night of his death, and took more than he should have!.

I don't know if he thought he was going to die - or even if he wanted to!. You will probably never know!.

But, I wish you the best for you!. Keep close with friends and family, they're there to help you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The effects of heroin are such that you don't feel anything especially if it is an overdose!. I offer my dearest condolences for your loss, I am so sorry!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi Anna, sorry for your loss,

First of all, ignore merrywhiterose, she does not have a clue!. AS others have said he felt very little or no pain at all!. Especially combined with hypothermia!. He probably did not know he was going to die, so he did not feel scared!.

Although I do not know you I feel sad when writing this!.

Love and prayers
