Helping an alcoholic and/or drug addict?!

Question: Helping an alcoholic and/or drug addict!?
I ran into a 2nd cousin who is about 26!. When he was 18 or 19, he left home and wasn't heard from for several years!. I saw him only once before this weekend, about 3 years ago!.
He is filthy!. Homeless!. Lives in a shelter sometimes!. Fits all his possessions in a small duffel bag!. Today I got him to come over to my house for a shower and a meal!. We also washed all his clothing and got him some new socks and underwear!. I gave him no cash!. He wanted to sleep in my house, but my wife and I decided that was a bad idea!. He's sleeping in a resin chaise lounge in my back yard!. Actually I can see he's smoking a cigarette (I hope that is it) he had a small polyester blanket!. He won't freeze out there!.
We told him he has to move on tomorrow!. Have we done too much!? Have we done too little!? As a family, we have decided to only do the minimum we can until he makes an effort to get off drugs and booze, find a job and a permanent place to live!.
He has problems, but makes no effort to solve them!. Thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think what you did is just right!. No one can do anything for him!. He has to do himself!. I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict and nobody could say or do anything to make me stop!. I had to want it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think what u did was nice and u shouldnt of change what u did!.!. its funny how you question yourself have u done to much or not alot!.!.but i can tell you when he surrenders to his addiction he does not think of u or anyone at all its a shame !.!.

you should try to talk to him about going for inpatient rehab hes been an addict for awhile and hes going to need some serious help!.!.

i knwo from personal experience no one can make u want to stop u have to do it on your own and its only when u hit rockbottom u decide u want to change !. Obviously being homeless and broke isnt his rockbottom !.!.this story breaks my heart b/c we r the same age and hes still so young !.!.is he still using!?!? its hard if hes homeless how can he get a job!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

There is nothing you can do, if he dosen't want help!. It's gotta be his decision to want to change!.
One definition of hitting rock bottom, is when the last thing you lost, or the next thing you're about to lose, is more important to you, than drinking or drugging!.
If he's unemployed, homeless, and squatting in his 2nd cousins' backyard, it sounds to me like he shouldput the shovel down, stop digging, and realize that he has hit way bottom!
He needs GOD, and a program(AA,NA), before he ends up in jail, an institution, or even worse!.!.!.!.dead! Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
