Advice from people who have been to short term therapy?!

Question: Advice from people who have been to short term therapy!?
I have been really stressed/depressed lately!. I am 99% sure that it's because of school!. I'm a PhD candidate and I feel like I am not qualified to do the research that I need to be doing!. I makes me feel like crap!. I oversleep, distract myself (Y!A) and clean my house obsessively just to avoid doing research!. I've been skipping class!. I know it's classic signs of depression, and I want to seek help!.!.!.but I'm afraid that they are going to try to make me take meds!.!.!.I don't want that!. I'm afraid the meds will just make me complacent and stay with something that I hate!. What I really want to someone to talk with that can help me make a good decision!.

So please share any experiences with me about short term therapy!.!.!.

thanks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your university should have short-term therapies available for grad students at low to no cost, maybe even right on campus!. Check with Student Health Services!.

Procrastination isn't something they'll prescribe medication for!. Stress and depression are another thing, but that doesn't sound like your primary problem!. You don't have to take any medication if you don't want to, even if the therapist you see really encourages you to!. You are very articulate and clearly have insight into what is going on!.

You suffer from something called "imposter syndrome" and the stress comes from the fear that someone will find out that you are not competant!. I've put a link below!. This isn't an officially recognized psychological disorder, but those who have it often suffer greatly, just as you describe!.

My guess is that if you've made it this far, you are plenty competant! Personally, it sounds like you might benefit from a few meetings with a Life Coach!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Doesn't sound like depression to me!. It sounds like procrastination!.
Anyway, I had some sessions with a therapist once, they lasted about 6 weeks, meeting once a week!. I had a traumatic experience happen that I needed help getting through!. He never mentioned drugs at all!. We'd just talk about how I felt about the situation, and he gave me new ways of looking at it, and after about 6 weeks, I came to terms with what had happened and was able to move on!.
That's about it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Don't you have a Dean or some sort of academic consultant who is working with you on this!? I agree, if this is something temporary you should not be put on meds!.!.!.!.I'm bipolar and trust me you DON'T want to become labeled if this is merely situational!.!.!.!.I would consult the "powers that be" in your university and see if there are alternatives!.!.!.!.surely there are !.!.!.!.I wish you all the look and congratulations on your high academic status!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, i was just at my doctor yesterday for depression and i was scared i was going to be given meds too!. My doctor referred me to a psychologist, and did not give me any meds!. I expressed to him that i do not like taking medicine like that!. I have gone to the therapist yet, but i think you should start off with that rather than medicine!. Go to your doctor! feel betterWww@Answer-Health@Com

Seek a consultation with a therapist who practices Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - in the first session you can determine whether or not it is depression, and then you can work through it without meds!. Meds are always a last resort, usually only for severe and persistent depression!. Yours does not sound severe, as severe depression often presents with physical symptoms such as aching and nausea!. CBT is very effective and after a comparitively short amount of time, you should start to feel better!. If not, they will move on to another course of therapy!. Keep in mind that if there are no alternatives they may suggest medication, but only as a last resort! Good luck, and btw, congrats on making it as far as a PhD candidate!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
