Answers:
Sleep disorders may manifest with insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)!.

1) Inadequate sleep hygiene: Sleep is impaired by certain behaviors!. They include consumption of caffeine or sympathomimetic or other stimulant drugs (typically near bedtime, but even in the afternoon for people who are particularly sensitive), late evening exercise or excitement (eg, a thrilling TV show), and an irregular sleep-wake schedule!. Patients who compensate for lost sleep by sleeping late or by napping fragment nocturnal sleep further!. Insomniacs should adhere to a regular awakening time and avoid naps regardless of the amount of nocturnal sleep!. Adequate sleep hygiene measures are important (see Table 3: Sleep and Wakefulness Disorders: Ways to Improve SleepTables)!.

2) Adjustment sleep disorder: Acute emotional stressors (eg, job loss, hospitalization) can cause insomnia!. Symptoms typically remit shortly after the stressors abate; insomnia is usually transient and brief!. Nevertheless, if daytime sleepiness and fatigue develop, especially if they interfere with daytime functioning, short-term treatment with hypnotics is warranted!. Persistent anxiety may require specific treatment!.

3) Psychophysiologic insomnia: Insomnia, regardless of cause, may persist well beyond resolution of precipitating factors!. The main reason is usually anticipatory anxiety about the prospect of another sleepless night followed by another day of fatigue!. Patients often spend hours in bed focusing on and brooding about their sleeplessness!. Patients typically have greater difficulty falling asleep in their own bedroom than falling asleep away from home!.

Optimal treatment combines behavioral strategies and drugs!. Although behavioral strategies are more difficult to implement and take longer, effects are longer lasting!. Behavioral strategies include sleep hygiene, education, relaxation training, stimulus control, and cognitive therapy!. Hypnotics are suitable for patients who need rapid relief and whose insomnia has had daytime effects such as EDS and fatigue!. These drugs must not be used indefinitely!.

4) Physical sleep disorders: Physical disorders may interfere with sleep and cause EDS!. Disorders that cause pain or discomfort (eg, arthritis, cancer, herniated disks), particularly those that worsen with motion, cause transient awakenings and poor sleep quality!. Treatment is directed at the underlying disorder and relief of symptoms (eg, with bedtime analgesics)!.

5) Mental sleep disorders: Most major mental disorders are associated with EDS and insomnia, which are reported by 90% of patients with major depression!. Conversely, 60 to 69% of chronic insomniacs have a major mental disorder, most commonly a mood disorder!.

Patients with depression may have initial sleeplessness or sleep maintenance insomnia!. Sometimes in bipolar disorder and seasonal affective disorder, sleep is uninterrupted, but patients complain of unrelenting daytime sleepiness!.

6) Insufficient sleep syndrome (sleep deprivation): Patients with this syndrome do not sleep enough at night (for various social or employment reasons) to stay alert when awake!. This syndrome is probably the most common cause of EDS, which disappears when sleep time is increased (eg, on weekends or vacations)!.

7) Drug-related sleep disorders: Insomnia and EDS can result from chronic use of CNS stimulants (eg, amphetamines, caffeine), hypnotics (eg, benzodiazepines), other sedatives, antimetabolite chemotherapy, anticonvulsants (eg, phenytoin Some Trade Names

Commonly prescribed hypnotics can disrupt REM sleep, causing irritability and apathy and reducing mental alertness!. Abrupt withdrawal of hypnotics and sedatives can cause nervousness, tremors, and seizures!. Many psychoactive drugs can induce abnormal movements during sleep!.

Thyroid, or other medical problems: he should have a complete checkup!. TIRED/LACK ENERGY: Take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements, daily!. They should be certified as being free of mercury, and if containing vitamin E, it should be shown as from a natural source; otherwise it is synthetic: avoid it! Consume with an orange, grapefruit, or their freshly squeezed juice, or another good antioxidant!. Consider taking a 100% natural vitamin B complex, daily!. Eat healthily, in accordance with your "nutritional type" as determined at http://www!.mercola!.com/ SEARCHBAR!.

Drink 2 - 4 cups of green tea, daily: preferably honey/lemon ginseng, from Celestial Seasonings: supermarket tea aisle!. As with all herbal/green teas, use lemon/lime, and/or a little sweetener (NOT ARTIFICIAL!!!) but no cream, or milk!. Exercise daily!.

Xylitol is preferable, (health food stores) or fruit sugar (fructose, such as "Fruisana", from supermarket sugar aisles) or even a little honey, because these will reduce "sugar spikes", which later deplete you of energy!. Minimise/eliminate consumption of highly processed foods, particularly grain products, such as white bread, donuts, cake, cookies/biscuits, or anything with sugar!. Opt for more wholefoods, non-starchy vegetables (especially broccoli, and spinach, with lemon, or vinegar), and fruit!. Have a medical checkup, (thyroid function, adrenals, etc!.) including blood tests, for low iron levels!. Many people in Western countries are lacking in minerals, such as zinc, magnesium, iron, and calcium, so it is a good idea to have those levels checked as wellWww@Answer-Health@Com
