My wife was diagnosed as being bipolar almost two years ago!. It nearly destroyed our marriage!.

She got help and it took roughly 18 months for her doc to get her meds right!. About four months ago I built a social bipolar website as a project that my wife and I could work on together!.

Anyway, there are 144+ members and it is a great bunch of people!. If you'd like to get a lot of opinions, mostly from bipolars, I'd be happy to have you as a member!.

The site is http://www!.bpbabble!.com

One of the members, NikkiVampireX, has a bipolar Dad and could probably give you some solid advice from similar experiences!.

Hope that helps,

At the time you don't realize you have a problem!. With me it took a wake up call for me realize it!. I almost lost my husband due being bipolar!. You go through mood changes rapidly and there is nothing you can do about it!. You don't even know why it happened!. Stupid things can trigger a bad mood or even depression!. I started taking meds for it and I am very happy!. My husband is so happy with me now we both love to be around each other again!. It can ruin relationships with anyone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

With the right support and possibly medication your mum should lead as normal a life as possible!. It might take a while to come to this stage as they might not get the medication most suited to her first time round!. You might know that being bipolar your mum will go though depressed stages and elated stages, with a happy medium inbetween!. Everyone experiences these differently!. My uncle had bipolar disorder and had a fully functional family life!. He had a great attitude to his illness!. I've worked with many patients who have gone on to have families after their diagnosis!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

yes!. My bipolar disorder was serious and it caused me to call the cops to wrongfully put my wife in jail!. In another situation, I almost slit some guys throat last night with a kitchen knife for being a d*ckhead to my wife!.!. not jokin either!.!.!. I had a serious manic episode then where I felt like slitting my throat shortly after!. it is pretty serious!. I am on 500mg Depakote ER right now and probably need about 1500 mg!.!. My wife and I are still close and are having a great relationship, but just the smallest little thing can make me go berserk!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was ill for 9 very long years with black depression later dx as BP!. Too many hospitals, too many meds, too much therapy, and too many ECT's all didn't help!. I attempted suicide 4 times I wanted to die so badly!. Finally a pdoc came along and found the right combo of meds!. I take Lithium/Lamictal which has been my saving grace!. Moods are stable!. I am very lucky!. I am actually back to work again, even though the previous pdocs said I would never work again!. Lucky also, I had the support of a wonderful hubby and family!.

You can leave a note on my blog if you wish; I will reply as I check in daily!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeh, before being diagnosed I made a pretty big mess of my life!. I'd get into relationships when hypomanic or balanced and eventually withdraw when depressed which usually came after biiitchy so sooner or later it put an end to them!. I royally screwed up one good job!. Spent a lot of years feeling terrible when my ups and downs predominently mixed together!. It definitely effected by everyday life!.

It's good that your mom was diagnosed!. Her life quality will improve when she finds the right meds!. Your relationship with her most likely will also improve!. Psychologically, it might be hard for her to accept being diagnosed with a serious mental illness!. It is just a label!. She's already spent a life living it, but be understanding there!. Also, do what you can to get over your own stigmas!. We are just regular ppl and half the planet is nuts anyway!.

The search for the right medication can take a while, for some long enough to call it the med-merry-go-round!. Be patient with her through this!. The side effects of some are not at all pleasant!. Hopefully, she has the type of doc who will not expect her to live with significant side effects!. It's not necessary!. Everything is a trade off, though!. So, some side effects may be there!.

A good website on meds from the user's perspective is http://www!.crazymeds!.us You can look around, but questions would have to come from her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

People who suffer from Bipolar Disorder tend to go from one extreme to the other!. One month they're inspired, inventive, esctatic, the life & soul!. Then a month or so down the line, they're depressed, unmotivated, woeful ect!.
It can destroy relationships, very easily!. I know about it because someone I knew has it, it can really hard to deal with sometimes, but when they're happy it's the best feeling ever!.

It affects your everyday life through mood swings!.
It's not predictable, and sometimes the good times can be just as tough as the bad times!.

Your mother is still your mother though,
she's still the same person, despite whichever mood she may be in!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

One of the most important things you can do for your mum, is to let her know that you love her, this is very important when she is in a "down" period!. Its then when everything looks so dark and terrifying, to have somebody be there and say they love you, no matter how your feel, look or behave!. Be there fore her let her know, you love her whatever!.
I am talking from experience, 3yrs ago I had a breakdown, ex husband decided that he wanted to single, if it had not been for my daughter (19) constantly telling me she loved me, and no she didn't mind that I had not cooked anything, or had not had a shower for a week ! she was also great when I was on a high and embarrassed her, I would not have been here now!.
So search on the web, go get a book from library, and read up on it!. But remember, as with a lot of mental illness, everybody shows different symptoms!. She will need to be passed by her Dr to a specialist unit!.
Don't worry, give her all the support you can, and if you have siblings make then aware!.
Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
