Why is is that all of a sudden, every time a child misbehaves...?!

Question: Why is is that all of a sudden, every time a child misbehaves!.!.!.!?
everyone wants to diagnose them with ADHD, autism, aspbergers or similar and put them into therapy!?!

I know that their are kids out their who do suffer from serious problems, but it really disturbs me that peope are so quick to assume there is something pathologically wrong! Plenty of kids in the past have behaved in all sorts of ways and turned out fine when they grew up!.!.!.

Why are we becoming a nation of poor, traumatised souls in need of therapy and medication at the first hint of everything not going well!? People dealt with their problems by talking about them with their families in the past, now we are all seen as in need of professional help and medication!!

What are your views on this!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I personally feel that ADHD is totally overused, autism and aspergers are more specific, and so usually properly diagnosed!. I can remember registering a young mother at my practice, who totally ignored their 4 year old as she ran riot around my room, opening drawers etc, who turned around, yelled at the child and said 'oh, don't mind her, she's got ADHD!.' It was so obvious the girl needed some love and attention!
I'm not saying all ADHD children are fakes, but I really do think the parenting skills should be looked at as well!. I have a couple of friends, one with a severely autistic son, and another who's son has aspergers, and they both dote on their children and support them in any way they can!.
It's a shame parents are not supported more!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think is cos is a business of the pharmaceutical companies , they are after money like any other business (sadly)

In this society where both parents work and leave their kids to be brought up by nannies and teachers, it is obvious that they are gonna be screaming for attention and with problems at school!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Drugs = money
Money= American way

I don't agree with it, but that's how it is here in the USAWww@Answer-Health@Com

Wow, first time I'm hearing this!. Yeah, a lot of parents will see their child as a little angel and will turn the other cheek(perhaps too many times) when they hear something bad about them!.

I like to listen to both sides the story first before I make a conclusion!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

"Everyone wants to diagnose them with ADHD,aspergers or similar"
A very sweeping statement, and as the father of an autistic child, I very much doubt that it is true!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I tend to agree with you!. There are indeed children with very real & serious problems but there are also plenty of people (parents & 'professionals') who do seem very quick to stick labels on children who actually behave like children! (Consequently, the children who really need help often have to wait) Maybe, we are living in a time when children are expected to grow up & become 'miniature adults' too quickly!. So, more people are looking for an excuse, if you like, for the behaviour!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Easy fix to a hard problem, I would urge anyone who has a misbehaving child to first look at themselves before they put a child through the possible label of ADHD!.
There are kids who suffer it and fair enough they need the diagnosis, but when feckless parents pull the ADHD card it's wrong!. If a child is parented badly the child behaves badly!. Simple as that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think it's because parents aren't allowed to punish their children any more!. It's socially unacceptable to do anything to stop a child from misbehaving besides using words or drugs!. I think I'd drug up my kid too if I wasn't allowed to stop them from misbehaving!. People feel bad for disciplining animals!. Everyone needs discipline and order, drugs are not the solution!. Ritalin doesn't fix the way a person thinks!. Professional help, therapy is probably good for every one, if every one could afford it, I bet it would help anyone to talk about their problems with someone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Here's my take:

1!. People like quick answers, labels, things that they can understand!. Human behavior is messy and doesn't lend itself to quick answers, labels, etc!., so this is very attractive!.

2!. How do we know for sure that everyone who says their kid was diagnosed isn't "self diagnosing" to make use of the attractive elements of #1, above, to explain some slightly non-standard behavior in their kid!? I know a lot of people who SAY they are dyslexic, yet if pressed, they have not actually be diagnosed!. They're just reaching for a term they've heard and applying it to their issue!.

3!. Behavior that is outside of the "average" includes 50% behaviors over the average (could this be the ADHD group!?) and 50% under the average (could this be the autism group!?) So, what I'm saying is that most people aren't right on the norm, and the further away one gets from that, the more likely they are to want to have some explanation, i!.e!., see item #1, above!.

4!. Neuro science and studies of the brain are just taking off thanks to all the new tools there are to read what's going on in our heads!. There is a tendency for new things to be applied to see how it fits everything until the scientific community figures out where it really fits best!.

5!. Mental health issues have historically had a horrible stigma attached to them, and the people who were not right on the norm were not understood, not identified, not diagnosed, and not treated for this reason!. It was a social death sentence, pretty much!. In our family, in the early 1900s, the term was "funny turned", as in "Malcolm's boy, yeah, he is funny turned!." It was mostly kept a shameful secret, unless the person drooled!. In the big media cities, the stigma is becoming less, so it's in the public eye more!.

6!. The media has us all MUCH more aware of these things than even we would have been in the 80s, etc!. With 24 hr news on dozens of channels in our homes, they have to cover something, and people are always interested in something that might apply to their KIDSSSSS!.

7!. People used to talk to their family members!. Have you noticed how people's families have changed!? Many people including many who post for help on here don't actually have those families anymore to talk to!.

That's just off the top of my head!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

in the past there was only corporal punishment whenever something was wrong with a kid!. I barely experience any "talk" to help with things!.

today there is more awareness and when parents do have a kid like this, then they need to learn how to treat with them!. be lucky they know about adhd!. in some countries if you ask a doctor for a rebelious child, they will say that your kid is spoiled!. they have no idea about adhd or autism!.

corporal punishment is also counterproductive, in some cases it goes so far that a kid kills their own parents!. it just happened now in europe, I read about it in the newspaper!. times have changed!. in the history spanking was the only cure and every kid was labeled as spoiled, but today we should be happy that we know that it could be something wrong with the kids mind!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my view is lifes too fast!. mainly both parents work or are under pressure and everyones looking for a quick fix to problems!. Not always a good idea!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had a lot of problems as a child and was referred to the child psychologist but the set up was all wrong (Late 1960's early 1970's in the UK) and I didn't feel safe there - I was scared they would tell my mum that I told the truth about what was happening between my parents - the real problem was my parents fighting and the domestic violence etc and my parents taking their anger out on me etc!.

I wasn't able to disclose the abuse happening at home for fear of being punished (I was aged around 6-7 years of age) but my behavioural problems stemmed from all the trauma I suffered!. I'm still having therapy now for all the abuse I suffered as a child!.

So I would suggest that "SOME" of these children are having behavioural problems and emotional difficulties because they are in dysfunctional families or have dysfunctional parents and could be suffering some form of abuse or trauma the result of which are problems expressed in extreme or abnormal behavioural and emotional problems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
