I can tell you love your duck very much!. However, the amt of guilt you're feeling for its death is unreasonable!. You need to begin to look within yourself!. How much are you taking responsibility for your own needs to be met!? If you are able to reasonably care for your own needs, in time, you would be able to care for others, including another pet's life, in reasonably functional ways, not dysfunctionally!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You made an honest mistake!. You have to remember, it wasn't malicious or cruel, it was just an accident!.

You didn't just sit there, you went out and searched! You called for him and did everything a reasonable, loving person would have done!. You made a silly mistake that had an unfair consequence, and all you can do now is remember the good times!. Beating yourself up won't do any good!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am so sorry for your loss!. It was an accident!. You gave the duck a good life while he was with you!. Don't feel guilty, you didn't mean to hurt him!. Years ago I slammed a regrigerator and killed a kitten!. I felt horrible for a long time!. Still think of it, but I know I didn't mean to!. Try to think of positive things and write down how you feel!. If you didn't mean to thats all you can do!. It won't change what happened but know that you are not responsible for things that happen some times!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

We learn from our mistakes I knew a girl who had it much worse she was just 8 years old and went outside with her kitten and the dogs kept barking and some of them weren't kept in the yard and the dogs jumped tring to get the kitten she dropped it on accident and the dogs riped the kitten and you could see it's internal organs!.!.!.!.!. We all have bad memories in life we learn from mistakes anyway and I know you wont makes the same mistake!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It was an accident!. You know you loved your pet!. You also know that because of this you will never have another similar accident with any of your future pets!.

If it's any consolation, I understand that death by freezing is very peaceful, you just go to sleep basically!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think everyone that loves their pets have,at some time or another, felt they could have done better!. Sometimes things happen that are beyond your control!. Ive had pets all my life and there are things that I still regret!. So dont beat yourself up too badly!. Care and love is the best any of us can do, no matter what happens!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This may be cold, but look at it this way!. You will be just as dead in a relatively short period of time for a variety of reasons!.

Don't spend too much more time dwelling on this and move on to better things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are just going to have to figure out how to live with what happened, after all it was an accident!. If you really think you need it, it might help to seek some sort of counseling!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You may find that therapy can help you work through the pain that you're experiencing!. I'm sure that logically you know that this wasn't really "your fault"!. It was an accident, and, tragic as they are, accidents do happen!.

You did everything that you could to find him again, it's not like you were heartlessly torturing him!.

Finally, would you rather spend the rest of your life mourning his death, or would you rather spend it celebrating his wonderful life with you, and expressing to everyone what a unique and loving relationship that you had with this precious animal!?

Do something in his honor!.!.!. plant a garden in his memory with little duck figurines, donate to the world wildlife fund!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

We all make mistakes!. Feeling guilt and anger at yourself won't change what has happened!. Accept that your duck died, give him a good burial and tell him what you are feeling now!.

And then let it go!. You might like to light a candle everyday in memory of him until you move on emotionally and that can be your time to dwell on your duck and then let it go for the rest of the day!.

I can only imagine how you must feel right now but as someone else wrote, you now know that you will never do anything like that again!. Also, you went looking for him and he didn't come when he was called and so what else could you do!? You did what you could as soon as you noticed he was gone!.

If you had just left him out there because he was annoying you with his quacking then it would be different!. But you didn't!. You loved your duck and something unfortunate happened!.

The guilt will probably be there a little while but just let it pass!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think, because of your guilt, you have mistaken the process of grieving for fault, which is actually very normal!. So let me first say that, yes you have lost something terribly important to you and that hurts like hell!. You have to remember that blaming yourself for this misfortunet mistake is not only self defeating but it distracts from what your pet truly meant to you!. In other words, don't remember him this way or it will eventually become something you want to forget as apposed to something you look back on and smile in remembrance of!.

I don't want this to sound insensitive, but your wonderful friend is not hurting anymore!.!.!. you are; and its important both to yourself and to the memory of your friend to let it be!.

The following quote, I feel, says's it all:

Guilt upon the conscience, like rust upon iron, both defiles and consumes it, gnawing and creeping into it, as that does which at last eats out the very heart and substance of what once mattered!. -Robert South

Please be good to yourself!.
