Have you ever been misdiagnosed with a mental illness????!

Question: Have you ever been misdiagnosed with a mental illness!?!?!?!?
My couselor, who I meet with once a week and have for the past 2 1/2 years, reports to my psychatrist so that he constantly has updates on my condition!. My couselor is now saying that I may have dissociative identity disorder!. I think she is wrong and I don't want it to go back to my psychatrist who will write it down in his folder thus cementing the diagnosis!. I really don't believe I have it (I have done a ton of research on it) so how do I stop my couselor from bringing it up!? Also, how do I approach the subject with my psycatrist!? I absolutely love my couselor as she has helped me through so much so I don't want to change!. I just want to drop the subject and not be diagnoised with it!.
I do suffer from anxiety and depression!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I was diagnosed with "anxiety attacks" and treated for same!. Drugs didn't help and a friend suggested I see a gynocologist!. This friend has no medical training but she was right on the ball!. The GYN was very angry with my GP, when she found the answer with a simple blood test!. - Menopause!. I no longer get the sweats or the palpitations and I am no longer confused and unable to sleep!.

I have also been diagnosed with Major Depression but since the diagnosis, friends have shown me I live with a Narcissist and no wonder I am depressed!. Now I have the answer and know it isn't me going crazy, I am on my way to being well!. I found a support group and they are a wonderful help!. Moral: Thank goodness for my friends, I would be "Crazy" without them!.
I truly feel for you and wish you all the best!. I understand your fear but if you comply, it is after a place that can help you!. I have personal knowledge of friends who are mentally ill!.
The ones who comply and take their meds without fail are functioning in normal society with jobs and homes but the ones who don't listen and go off the meds are continually depressed and always in and out of the hospital!. Do it for yourself, it can only help!. If you resist it makes it hard and they get stroppy with you!. Listen to the people who are trying to help you!.
I have also worked in admin at a mental institution and heard what the staff say about patients behind their backs!. Staff are just there to help you, some of them truly care and really try to do what they think will be best!. Some even get upset that they can see the end of the tunnel for a patient and then that same patient goes off their tablets and is back at square one!. That is frustrating for the doctors and nurses who thought they had the patient able to cope on the outside!.
I hope you do get help, there is always something better coming, when we are sick we just don't see it and don't believe the outcome can be great!. Good Luck and my heart is with you!. Take care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you don't believe you suffer from this disorder, tell your counselor exactly how you feel!. Tell her you have done tons of research and you don't believe you fit into that category!. Someone told me that I may be bipolar, but I knew that wasn't true!. I was very depressed though!. Once I got over my depression, things were back to normal!. I am so glad I didn't listen!. Most doctors misdiagnose depression or anxiety for something else!. If you feel you don't have that disorder, then don't accept that as the truth!. If she continues to insist that you suffer from that disorder after you have told her your thoughts, you should consider seeing someone else!. You know yourself better than any doctor or counselor ever could!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was first diagnosed with severe clinical depression (by a psychotherapist), but when I was referred for more intensive treatment, I was re-diagnosed with bipolar II, which seems to be pretty damn accurate!.

Ask questions!. Their job is to anwer them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Julie, when I went to the doctor last week he told me that there is nothing wrong with me, that my brain is totally normal! Man, is he wrong! That is a mis-diagnosis in my book!. Good luck to you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Get yourself a new counselor!. Avoid your psych doctor!.!.!.!.

Get on with life, and enjoy it!. You deserve better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well they usually do not mis diagnose THAT disorder!. that is a pretty big one and they usually have their reasons for that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

first it was bipolar disorder, now its simply panic disorderWww@Answer-Health@Com

Counselors are not qualified to diagnose a mental condition!. Believe me, I have two in my family and they couldn't diagnose a cold!. Counselors only have master's degrees!.

Each person has their own opinion of what you have!. I have seen more than 20 psychiatrists over the years and I have been diagnosed with:

Bipolar I w/ psychosis (Wrong! never been manic)
Paranoid schizophrenic
Schizo affective bipolar type(again, never been manic)
Schizo affective depressed type
Severe depression with psychosis
Severe depression without psychosis
Depression, Anxiety, and cognitive impairment

The majority of them agree, as do I, that I have schizoaffective depressed type!.

What it boils down to is that your diagnosis doesn't matter!. It is just a number on a piece of paper for insurance purposes!. Doctors treat you and give you drugs based on what symptoms you have, not by your diagnosis!. Diagnoses are just labels!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
