Usually doctors will prescribe anti-depressants!. It is most common these days to prescribe SSRIs like Prozac and less likely the older tricyclic ADs like Amitryptiline or Imipramine!. Weight gain is a possibility, but by no means inevitable!. It can depend on how individual's metabolism responds to the drug - I knew many people who put on weight, but others on similar doses of the same medication didn't put on excessive weight!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are loads of antidepressant meds that a doctor can prescribe!. It depends on the symptom severity, length of depressive episode, whether the depression has been resistant to any medications before etc!.
I think the most commonly prescribed is diazipam (valium) but SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are also used!. If you google these you will get wikipedia pages that tell you all about them and give you a list of each type and side effects (which will include weight gain/loss)!. Also if you make it clear to the doctor if you dont want to lose or gain weight they will be able to prescribe an appropriate medicationWww@Answer-Health@Com

There are three ways which depression may be treated
1!. Psychotherapy
2!. Electro convulsive therapy
3!. Drug treatment

The first two will have no effect on your weight!. Drug treatment is used for people with predominantly physical symptoms and ANTI DEPRESSANT DRUGS prescribed!.
They only work if they are taken in sufficient doseage over a long enough period of time!. There are three classes
1!. Tricyclics
2!. MAOIs
3!. Lythium Fluvoxamine trptohan

But it takes at least 10 days to have any beneficial effect on your depression!. rather than affecting your weight, these drugs can cause dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, constipation, difficulty in pissing but these symptoms often improve as your treatment continues!.

An overdose of such drugs can cause abnormal heart rhythm, seizures, coma and occasionally death!. food and drink containing tyramine such as cheese or red wine may interact with your drugs to cause a dangerous rise in your blood pressure if taken with MAOIs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It depends on the type of doctor!. SSRIs do not directly make you gain or lose weight, but they may make you feel more or less hungry or they could decrease your energy!. Watch what you eat and get exercise and you should not have a problem with weight change!. The most prescribed medications are SSRIs!. In my experience if they make you too tired, they aren't worth it!. They do different thiings to different people!. Usually the benefits outweigh the side effects!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i was on 3 diferant typs of medication over 4 years!. they all made me very much worse and each time i told the doctor, he uped the dose and made me very ill, i suffered things like panic atacs and faintinf, even now after being off them 6 months i still havent recoverd from the side efects, there are 10!.000 a year who die as a result of taking this kind of drug!. if you do feel depressed just get a camera and go into the countryside!. you will soon forget your problems, do this as often as you can!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Its true anti-depressants can sometimes put on weight or cause you to lose weight!. If you are concerned just ask your GP and work with him to see which suits you best!. If its one that puts on weight but helps your depression then if your mood is better you will be able to control your eating better and keep the weight off!.

It is all personal!. Look into medications the side effects are there!. You might go on a lower dosage!. The doctor will tell you of the side effects and will give you the reason why he wants to have you on that medication!. Google the medication and the answers will give you insight so you can make a choice that you want!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
