What's up with begging for a diagnosis?!

Question: What's up with begging for a diagnosis!?
I've noticed a lot folks post on here asking if they have a particular diagnosis, then when they are told they don't meet criteria they keep reposting, hoping that if they say the same thing a different way that they'll get "diagnosed" with whatever it is they, apparently, hope they have!.

I find it kind of sad - the ones that obviously don't appear to be trolls!. It's sad to think that a person *wants* be mentally ill!. What's even sadder is that I believe some of them might make themselves sick in the long run just from stress and worry over whether or not they have a disease they don't have!.

It's even worse when I know that the mentally ill consumers I work with wish they could get *rid* of their illnesses!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Heh, I lived in denial for many years because I just did not want to have an illness!. Boy, I'd like to get rid of it, too!

I think there are some trying to get the courage to go talk to their doctors and perhaps just aren't telling the whole story or aren't conveying well!. Most don't seem to be this way, though!. Hey, I guess we could say they are or are bordering a personality disorder!. Heck it's the mental health section!. Let's take liberties to diagnose absolutely everything with something other than acknowledging that everyone is slightly off center of the proverbial normal behavior!.

My own pet peeve is all the "you must be bipolar" responses to any kid who says I'm hyper one minute and sad the next!. I remember that as typical puberty!. Bipolar also only very rarely works like that in anyone beyond single digits!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think people are looking for reassurance!.

I don't think anyone would truely want to be mentally ill, if they knew what it was like!.!.!.
I hate the way some people see it as a fashion accessory! Like it's 'cool' to have OCD or be 'anorexic' when the truth is they don't have anything wrong with them! Attention thing!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

people like to play doctor and it can be dangerous to them because they think that the answers are all on the internet and doctors will just mess you up even more or put you on drugs and wait and see like some of the doctors you see on the tv now a days, yes some doctors are bad like that but not all of them are thats why its advised to get 2 or 3 opinions instead of taking it into your own hands!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

MaybeSOME OF THESE PEOPLE really BELIEVE THEY HAVE A problem and to scared or cant think where else to go for help so they come to this sit for some kind of answer!.
we cant speak for all the people who come on these sits now can we!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'd trade with anyone so goddamn desperate for a mental disorder any goddamn day!. I didn't ask for this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Couldn't agree more with your post - it seems like everyone wants to be told that they are bipolar or are suffering from depression, which I can't understand!. When you are suffering from depression you don't have to ask anyone whether you are or not, you KNOW you are!.

I've noticed a LOT of teenagers posting asking if they are depressed, listing loads of "symptoms" which are entirely normal during the teenage years and due to hormonal changes etc, and so many people are telling them "you need to see a doctor asap, you've got depression"!.

I don't know if there's anything that will change this though!. But I completely agree with you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Its very sad!. I'm really not sure how to explain my opinion on it, but I'll try!. Recently, the books and movies coming out very strongly romanticize mental illness!. Its made to seem that having a diagnosis makes you a deeper person, a more strong-willed person somehow, and a more mysterious person!. Its very similar to all of the books and movies about medieval times, quite a few people actually wish they could have lived in those times!. If they studied the REAL history of it, they'd probably be thankful that they weren't alive in that era!. I'm sure if these people you're referring to actually had to live a day actually having the disorder, they'd change their mind!.

Then again, there are the few people who really do have debilitating disorders, and the tendency of most people, now and throughout history, is to name things!. If a concept doesn't have a name, it can't be challenged, if a mental disorder doesn't have a name, it can't be 'cured'!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

yee i get what you mean definatley but at the same time do you really think people want to be ill, they are worried and the internet is a great resource for reasurance!. im sure you are an inteligent person by the way you write, think about it there is knowone that wants to be ill, sometimes you do get imature questions from obvious teenagers, e!.g!. teenagers stating they are depresed!. but i think if someone is asking questions like they have pain in their right side of they are scared of bipolar, they are legitimatlt worried, you do get people that are like that!. iv seen peple that are afraid of been ill its similar to ocd, but with their health and it is so simple to write a question!. within 5 minutes they get a reply and hey presto they can relax because they are safe

i definatley unnerstand where you are coming from though

another point to bare in mind is that you say you work with people who suffer from mental health, sotherefore you have more inteligence in that area of field than the average person who may or may not suffer from mental health, you cannot expect because you know that person isnt 'that ill' for them to know it!. if you go to the doctor and you are afraid because you have a cough, the doctor will reasure and say its an infection because he has knowledge in that area of field, just like you do in mental helath but to the pateint they are none the wiser!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
