Is "BiPolar" for real?!

Question: Is "BiPolar" for real!?
I love my sister!. She recently got diagnosed as being "BiPolar" and is upset that I think it's a crock!. I dont doubt that she is sad, but I hate it when people use a label such as "BiPolar" instead of just dealing with the issue!. You're sad! So do something to get happy! Being sad sucks!. Im sad a lot!. But I dont go getting diagnosed as "BiPolar"!. Then again, Id love some meds to make me happy!. And I realize "BiPolar" is not just being "sad"!. But I still think it's a crap term and makes people not deal with the real problem!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

All mental illness has been made up, therefore nobody has a mental disorder, they just are who they are meant to be; unless you're talking about down syndrome or something, that is an actual condition where you are missing a chromosome!. Bipolar Disorder is in fact a mental disorder!. It is far from a person's normal experience of being "sad"!. Bipolar Disorder involves both periods of depression and mania and can be horribly devastating!. It isn't a term to cover up some issue, but is actually the "real problem"!. The disorder is a legitimate inability for the person who suffers from it to control their moods, leaving them prone to a series of wide ranging moods that are debilitating!. If you want a bit more information, I recommend more research (perhaps you can start here http://www!.mayoclinic!.com/health/bipolar!.!.!. I also recommend reading some books on the subject!. An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison is a very good one!. Please try not to make judgements about the legitimacy of your sister's diagnosis without some honest research!. I'm sure she would appreciate it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I hate labels, so I know where you're coming from!. Especially ADD, I feel it's just an excuse that people use!.

Was she "formally" diagnosed!? It sounds as if you're describing mild depression, not bipolar disorder!. Which is very much real and hard to live with!. Either case, its a chemical imbalance, and to "just get happy" is not as easy as it is for others!.

Best thing you can do is support her and help her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, bipolar disorder is real as recognized by the American Psychologists Association, and it is much more than just "being sad" and needing to "do something about it!." This isn't your average everyday "oh I lost my dog so I'm sad" sadness!.

The best thing you can do for your sister is research bipolar disorder and support her!. You can find info at the APA website, apa!.org!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You are right is is crap to label some one!.To me some time the doctors arent always right bout things!.When I was younger they kept trying to prescribe anti depressant for me to take!. I never did!.I would like to say I am not crazy!. Sometimes tho people do suffer from depression!.You are right it is different from being sad!.In alot of cases medication can help!.But sometime doctors label and prescribe drugs just to solve a problen for themselvesWww@Answer-Health@Com

I guarantee it's real!. I just got back from the very bowels of hell!. A year of extreme mania and four years of the deepest depression!. This only gets worse with age!. She may not be to bad now, but without treatment it can get a lot worse!. One of my friends thinks it's a crock too, but then didn't see me for five years either!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If you really love your sister, educate yourself!. Who diagnosed her!? Depression/Bipolar is NOT the same as "being sad!."

Also, meds don't make you happy!. You take them so you can "clear the fog" so to speak and get down to doing the REAL work it takes to stay mentally healthy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

of course it's a real issue, bi-polar is exactly the issue, it's a physical condition with physical causes, there is no real treatment for it because you can't control when you get happy againWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yes bi-polar is for real!. Speaking from experience, I am diagnosed with the disease!. It sucks!. The highs and lows are murder!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No they aren't labels!. I know a lot of people who are mentally ill!. Bipolar disorder is very serious!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes ,it is real!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes it's real! No BS!
I dated a girl that was Bipolar for 3 yrs and i say it was just short of being mental!Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!.!.!. it's not crap!. In fact, often diagnosis is the bridge to effective treatment for the underlying issues!.

The diagnosis "bipolar" really refers back to the standard deviation, by which I mean the bell curve, of humanity, and someone who is extreme at the end in terms of emotional lability (going up and down) is considered bipolar!. It's that simple!.

Mental illness is NOT a crock, but I can see why you would think diagnosis might be!. Actually, most pdocs (I hope) believe that it is MOST important to treat the symptoms in an individualized therapy course, regardless of the diagnosis!. An example of a borderline case is schizoaffective disorder, which involves traits of bipolar and schizophrenia!. Many docs will have differing opinions on where the patient lies on the bipolar-schizophrenia spectrum

But back to diagnosis: A diagnosis is almost ALWAYS necessary in order to get approval for treatment from an insurance company!. That's just a fact!.

I know I'm not agreeing with you on every point, but I have a ton of experience with these things and felt the need to shed a little light!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
