buspar is a wonderful medication to treat anxiety! the reason for me saying that is because it has few side effects and it is NOT habit forming!. xanax is VERY habit forming! the person taking xanax gets hooked!.!.!.they tend to want more and/or need more for the drug to work!. their bodies become use to the drug and then they need more of it for it to work!. i have taken both medications and hands down buspar is the far better medication for my anxiety!. i went through withdrawls when i came off xanax!. it was horrible!

WARNINGS ON XANAX
Dependence and Withdrawal Reactions, Including Seizures
Certain adverse clinical events, some life-threatening, are a direct consequence of physical dependence to alprazolam!. These include a spectrum of withdrawal symptoms; the most important is seizure (see DRUG ABUSE AND DEPENDENCE )!. Even after relatively short-term use at doses of 4 mg/day, there is a high risk of dependence!. Spontaneous reporting system data suggest that the risk of dependence and its severity appear to be greater in patients treated with doses greater than 4 mg/day and for long periods (more than 12 weeks)!. However, in a controlled postmarketing discontinuation study of panic disorder patients who received XANAX Tablets, the duration of treatment (3 months compared to 6 months) had no effect on the ability of patients to taper to zero dose!. In contrast, patients treated with doses of XANAX Tablets greater than 4 mg/day had more difficulty tapering to zero dose than those treated with less than 4 mg/dayWww@Answer-Health@Com

I started Buspar 3 weeks ago (along with Prozac) - due to overwhelming circumstances beyond my control I started suffering from anxiety and panic attacks!. The Buspar took a long time to work (approx 2 weeks to get the full effect) - but now that it has kicked in I feel a lot better - the panic attacks are gone and the anxiety has pretty much stopped too!.
I don't know that I would recommend it - the circumstances that caused the anxiety have let up some - so I'm not sure if it's the medication that has me feeling better - or if it's my outlook about the situation!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
