Whats so bad about cutting?!

Question: Whats so bad about cutting!?
Everyone focuses on the cutting, making kids quit, taking their knives and razors away!.!. thats about as effective as filling up a flat tire without patching it!.
No one has yet been able to tell me whats so bad about cutting!. As long as the wounds don't go deep enough to damage vital tissue, and they're treated so they don't get infected, whats the big deal!?
Anyway, I'm tired of people shoving religious reasons down my throat, or saying that "other people look down on it!." I want to hear some legitimate arguments against it!.
oh, and I don't cut my arms!. My cuts are places no one i'm not close to can see, an!. So obviously i never did it for attention
& some say its a waste of time!.!. i could be doing much more productive things, like watching TV or eating!.!.!. because a swipe to the skin with a razor takes 4ever!.!.
i didn't do it cuz i was sad either!. i did it out of anger!.
i coulda hit someone or broken something!. instead, i cut, and it calmed me!.
so now tell me what you think!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

From a self-harmer (sort of recovered!)!.

I recognise the explanations you have for why people have silly reasons for being against self-harm!.

I think what is most important is the fact that cutting indicates a deeper pain, a psychological problem!. This anger you mention, which you treat by cutting!.!.!. what if the anger is worst!? You lose control of your cutting!?
I always thought I'd never do any harm, never get infected, but the truth is my anger made me cut and sometimes I did lose control, a few years passed by and eventually I needed stitches, I cut to deep!. Cuts are at constant risk of infection, time increases that chance!.

It's bad when people do the obvious thing - think taking the cutting instruments away will stop the cutting, because the psychological reasons for doing it are still there!.

I wouldn't say cutting is a totally "bad" thing, it's helped me deal with some traumatic experiences in my life where without coping mechanisms I may have resorted to suicide!. Lots of people use it as a very helpful coping mechanism!.
However, the bad thing is that it does progress, it can get worse, much much worse!.

People who say it is a waste of time are ignorant, they don't understand!.

What I think is you need to explore the reasons for the self-harm, with or without professional help, and weigh up whether or not it'd be better to try and utilise other ways of coping, which in the long-term will serve you better!.

If you were to trust anyone's opinion I'd say trust that of someone who has self-harmed for a long time (like myself) and does know the serious implications it can have for your future!.

I hope this helps you in even the smallest way to see that self-harm can be both a good thing, but bad too!.

Best of luck!.xWww@Answer-Health@Com

i dont have an answer because i was a cutter too, i just had to say your question is excellant and has a great point!.

i did it for the same reasons as you did!. out of anger and it calmed me too!. i'm glad i wasn't the only one who felt this way!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

my only problem is that it could lead to worse things and you actully maybe hurting yourself without realizing, and it could be a sign of depression, thats all!.!.!.just be careful, and you seem to have your own awnser thats it ok to do, and its really not!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I dont see it as being bad!. I am a cutter and I share most of your views on it!. I really like the question!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well, even if the wounds aren't deep and don't get infected, they still damage your body!. Even superficial wounds leave scars, and sometimes the scars can cause problems (reduce flexibility or restrict movement if they're near a joint, for example)!. Also, having lots of injuries means that you're more likely to get sick (not necessarily an infection) because your immune system is occupied with those and not with fighting off a cold or the flu or whatever's going around!.
Also, while cutting or otherwise self-harming is a coping mechanism, it's a faulty one!. Eventually cutting becomes something to have to cope with, rather than something you use to cope!. It's a sign of an underlying problem that needs to be addressed, even if you're doing it because you're angry, not sad (some people think that depression is anger turned towards the self!. Regardless, not healthy)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
