My mother has been placed in long term care for mental illness?!

Question: My mother has been placed in long term care for mental illness!?
I'm an adult that lives a few states away!. The situation with her seems to be at least very long term!.
I know it sounds horribly selfish, but how do I explain this to my husband's family and some friends when the casual "how's your family" thing comes up!?
Thank you very much for any adviceWww@Answer-Health@Com

I think a good thing to do is ask your mother what she's comfortable with you sharing or what type of response she'd like you to give - if she's lucid enough to speak with you about that!.

I work with a lot of mental health consumers, and even some highly affected ones are still able to speak about these things and have a desire to advocate for their own rights and dignity!. So many of them lose family support when they become ill - it will be a good thing for you to be able to let your mom know you care and want to respect her wishes!. You may also ask her treatment team what a good response is - they deal with this all of the time, and they may also be good "interpreters"/"mediators" between you and your mom if she has difficulty communicating effectively with you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

there's nothing selfish about your question as it would be hard for me as so much stigma is on those with mental illness!.please do not blame yourself for your mom being in the hospital,it isn't your fault!.maybe you can get some information on the type of mental illness your mom has,so you can learn more about it to help you better understand it,so this way you can share that knowledge on to them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
