I think my mother has a pill popping problem...?!

Question: I think my mother has a pill popping problem!.!.!.!?
I think my mom is addicted to OTC pain meds!. She is constantly stocking up on ibuprofens, tylenol, immodiums, prilosec, cold meds, etc!. She buys over $60 worth of OTC pills EVERY WEEK!!! I have also witnessed her taking more than the prescribed dose on more than one occasion!.
How can I help my mom see she has a problem!? I have tried approaching her about it before; showing her how much $ she spends a week on pills alone, suggesting alternatives to buying these pills (like seeing a doctor if she's really sick!!) and nothing!. Please help!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with what the answerer above said: she may be addicted, but could also be a hypochondriac!. They could be going hand-in-hand - she could be going through a scare, thinking she's sick when she's not, and is just trying to make herself feel better when there's nothing wrong, getting herself addicted to these medications, and perhaps getting addicted to the thought of getting better!.

Try looking up hypochondria on the internet, and see if shows any signs of the illness!. I have a very small bit of it, and even that small bit is hard to deal with!. After researching it for a bit, if you think she has it, why don't YOU try calling her doctor!? Talk to them about it, and see what they reccommend!.

I wish the best for you, and good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have all of those in my cabinet as well!. There are many people that do self medicate!.!. Run off some info!. and give her about this!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Are you sure she's an addict and not just a hypochondriac!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

sounds like an addiction problem to me!. it is a very sticky situation, and otc's are VERY addicting!. part of the disease of addiction is that the person HATES to admit they're an addict, bc they truly believe they are in control, and admiting that will be like admitting they are weak!.

(or at least that's how it was with me)

However, there is hope!. You can go to meetings called Naranon!. it's like a branch of Narcotics Anonymous, which is a support group of men and women who help eachother to achieve sobriety and stay clean!. Only Naranon is for the family and friends of addicts!. It's free and confidential!. i say find a meeting in your area, and attend, it's a great way to meet people who have the same problems you do, and together you can find ways to help your mom!.

Good luck with everything!
