Does anyone notice how selfish bipolar people are?!

Question: Does anyone notice how selfish bipolar people are!?
I have been nicknamed "the polarizer" by my husband because he is bipolar as well as both of my parents and both of my best friends!. These people are very needy and self-centered and I feel constantly drained dealing with them!. Does anyone feel that bipolar patients are quite selfish!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
My mother has had bi-polar for at least 30 years and I can remember all the things I have given up in her time of need!. On the other time I can remember all the times she has nursed me back to health when I was ill!. If your friends are real friends I am sure they help you out when you need it!.

I think my mother seems to be selfish but really isn't!. It's hard to describe but I think you understand what I am saying!. She is very needy and requires a lot but anyone with any medical condition would!.

Sometimes she calls and calls and I don't have the time to talk with her!. I just tell her that I understand she is not feeling well but I am not able to go here or there or talk for hours on the phone!. She understands!.

I hate to say this because I don't want to offend anyone but with my Mother sometimes if I give into her every need, she gets more needy and doesn't want to do anything for herself!. It hurts her more than helps!. Sometimes if people have to do something they will push themselves more to over come!.

Just take time for yourself, be there for your friends and family and on occasion learn to say " I understand but at the moment I have to do this or that" !.!.!. I am sure you have learned the difference between them just feeling bad and an emgerency!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

that sorta hurts in a way!.!.!.i am bipolar and i sure don't feel that i am self centered of selfish in anyway!. i try to give to others as much as possible!. yes there are times i might be needy but that goes for everyone not just people with bipolar! i don't like being put into a new stigma of being selfish and self centered!. we are all different with different types of bipolar!. just like there is all different types of people without mental illness that are self centered and selfish oh and needy!

so the answer to your question!.!.!.NO!

all i can say is i am sorry you are going through all of this! i wish i had more words to comfort you and tell you everything is going to be ok!.!.!.but we all know living with someone with mental illness things will never be ok for long!. i just wish you peace of mind sweetie! you will be in my thoughts! you have alo on your plate and i am sorry! I am probably the least selfish person I know, with the exception of my obsessions and continuous contemplations of suicide!. I do my best to exist outside of myself and show charity and empathy toward others, as I have experienced pain and suffering I would not wish upon anyone, and enjoy helping others through difficult times (even though I fail to help myself in the same situation!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

They don't mean to be shelfish hun!. But you do need to take a break for your self, so that you don't get tried like you are!. I know a suffer from mental illness and I don't want to take people's time I don't like being shelfish!. But most biplor people need alot of people there and if there meds are not helping that can add alot more stress on things!. Hang in there hun, I wish you the best of luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I too have noticed this, my cousin is this way!. My cousin is also a hypocondriac!. Any time anyone in the family has something such as a health problem, my cousin immediately starts having the same symptoms, and has to go to the doctor to make sure everything is ok!. I try to be as open minded about it, but it sometimes gets irritating!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You're grouping all bipolar people together based on a few people you know with the disease!. There are different types of bi-polar and not everyone is needy and self-centered!. It's cruel and ignorant to assume that everyone with bi-polar acts the same!. We don't!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No,i just think that almost every single person that goes to the psychiatrist is diagnosed as being bipolar,so of course some of them are going to be selfish!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I do!.
One of my best friends is bipolar and shes very selfish!.
If she gets bored or something she wants me to quit anything im doing just to "unbore" her!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am selfish but not bipolarWww@Answer-Health@Com

i have bipolar!. i also run a non-profit organisation for ppl with bipolar!. i think you are generalising, not all people with bipolar are like that!. HOWEVER!.!.!.

i have come across a lot of people who don't HAVE bipolar, they ARE bipolar - ie!. i am bipolar, everything i say and do is because i am bipolar, all my thoughts, feelings and actions are because i'm bipolar!.!. and that annoys the crap outta me!. like you, i find that draining!. for me having bipolar is no different to me having a heart condition!. i take medications for both conditions, sometimes they play up but i deal with it, see my dr's and get on with my life!.

i don't agree with the whole needy, self centered thing though!. it IS a medical condition and as such there are certain things people who have it need extra help with - again like any other condition!.

personally i can't drive cos of my heart!. when i need to go somewhere and need to get a lift cos i can't take public transport to where i need to go i don't just demand to be taken!. i ask, i work around my sister (usually), i give her money for petrol and i ALWAYS appreciate her taking me and only ask when it's absolutely necessary!. cos of my bipolar i struggle going out sometimes, or be around a lot of people - i don't sit there and whine about it and demand my friends don't go out for their birthdays cos i can't come or whatever!. they know it's hard for me to do and instead i'll do something else with them to make up for not going out!.

yes there are things i need help with sometimes, and things i struggle to do on my own but i don't think that makes me needy or self centered!. indeed my dr's and family find me a nightmare sometimes cos i'm so determined to be independant and not let either condition prevent me from doing things!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
