Question: What do you think of PPD and PPS, didnt get a lot of answers before and still very!.!.!.>!!!!?
I wonder how it is that some people do not believe that post-partum depression and psychosis exhist!. I am not talking run of the mill baby blues that almost all moms have even if just for a day or two, I mean actually depression or PP psychosis!. I have recently encountered some people in my husbands family that do not believe this is a true mental disorder for many post partum women!. (Most of those that dont believe it our men in his family however!.) I understand that it is a fairly newer diagnosis, but that is mostly due to the fact that in past decades women were too embarassed to talk about such things!. It was too "Taboo"!. Even my grandmother who is in her late 60's said that shes never heard of such a thing until more recently!. I am about to recieve my BS in psych (concentration in child psych!./lifespan developement)!. I have spent many clinical hours talking to women with these exact conditions and can't understand how anyone just "dosnt believe" them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Why do you wonder!? There are a lot of doubting Thomases out in the great big world!. Most don't believe because they have never experienced anything like that, or maybe even seen anything like that -- as they say, "seeing is believing!"

I believe postpartum depression (or sometimes peripartum depression), or even the "Baby Blues," can and does exist!. It is a fairly recent discovery, occurring within the first year after giving birth in around 1 of every 8 mothers, most commonly in women that have severe PMS -- it is caused by changes in hormones and can run in families!.

During pregnancy, the amount of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, in a woman's body increases greatly!. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, the amount of these hormones rapidly drops back down to their normal non-pregnant levels!. Researchers think the fast change in hormone levels may lead to depression, just as smaller changes in hormones can affect a woman's moods before she gets her menstrual period!.

Occasionally, levels of thyroid hormones may also drop after giving birth!. The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that helps to regulate your metabolism (how your body uses and stores energy from food)!. Low thyroid levels can cause symptoms of depression including depressed mood, decreased interest in things, irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, and weight gain!. A simple blood test can tell if this condition is causing a woman's depression!. If so, thyroid medicine can be prescribed by a doctor!.

As to the psychosis part !.!.!. Postpartum psychosis is rare!. It occurs in 1 or 2 out of every 1000 births and usually begins in the first 6 weeks postpartum!. Women who have bipolar disorder or another psychiatric problem called schizoaffective disorder have a higher risk for developing postpartum psychosis!. Symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and obsessive thoughts about the baby!. A woman may have rapid mood swings, from depression to irritability to euphoria!.

You understand it is a fairly newer diagnosis, but explain it away as mostly due to the fact that in past decades women were too embarassed to talk about such things!. I think they are finally just getting around to naming certain conditions, disorders, and diseases!.

When you finally receive your BS in psychology (concentration in child psych!./lifespan development), be sure to continue spending many hours talking to women with these exact conditions to help find a cure, or a possible trigger, or genetic makeup, etc!. Best of luck to you now & in the future!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know how you feel!. The world is full of idiots!. Half of the people that you come in contact with are at or below average intelligence!. Those whom you speak of are ignorant!. It is a genuine clinical diagnosis in my DSM-IV, even though it is in the appendix, and it is hard to get anything put in there!. This should be common knowledge by now but we can only pray for those who are ignorant!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
