If you are bi-polar, will doctors give you antidepressants?!

Question: If you are bi-polar, will doctors give you antidepressants!?
I was told that I can't go on anti-depressants because I am bi-polar, and that it might flip me into a state of mania!. However I feel that the current mood stabilizer I am on (Lamictal) is not helping me at all!.

I want to try antidepressants but my p-doc refuses!. I thought that bi-polar people CAN take antidepressants, but that the mood stabilizer (Depakote, Lithium) already helps prevent mania!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I took lamictal and zoloft!. I was diagnosed with bi-polar tendencies and mood disorder, as well as panic attacks and ocd, but anyway!. I am pretty sure that you could be prescribed something with the lamictal!. I know take abilify and paxil!. They seem to be working for me!. I am doing better on abilify than I did on lamictal!. There are many different meds out there and many doctors!. sometime you just need to find the right one of each that work for you!. I saw two psych doctors before I found the one that I have now been with for over a year and a half!. I know its hard sometimes to find that right doctors let alone the right meds, but maybe you need a new doctor!. best of luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Some people take ssri's once stabilized on their mood stabilizer such as lithium!. Lamictal added to lithium can provide some antidepressant relief but many times you need a dose of ssri too!. Zoloft is one that is used a lot for anxiety and depression that goes with bipolar!. And if not sleeping well can add seroquel to the mix!. It is about treating symptoms ie

Lithium and Lamictal to give a ceiling to the highs; a floor to the lows!.
Sometimes thyroxin if taking lithium; lithium kills thyroid!.
Seroquel for sleep!.
Zoloft for depression, anxiety, panic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. You can take some but there are a few that you do not need to take together!. It sounds as if you should be changed around maybe to Depakote or Lithium to see if one of these may work better for you!. Also sounds as if your Doctor is Not listening to you with having his mind so set and you NOT feeling better with what he has prescribed!.
Are you willing to find yourself another Doctor!? If so, please do!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try going to a different doctor!. If you are taking a mood stabilizer, then it will prevent you from getting mania when using an anti-depressant!. Ask your doctor for an official paper of his diagnosis, so that you don't need to be diagnosed again, and find a new psychopharmacologist who can prescribe both meds!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've never try any of this, but Litium is the one I would try!.!.!.
but just a try, any person as a responce different !.!.!.so u have to check out the feelings and effects!.!.!. yes Ill try to ask for Litium, if my doc say NO Ill get some other way :
Bye, good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

The supposed perfect combo for bipolar patients is an anti-depressant, mood stabilizer, possible anti-psychotic!. I've been bipolar for over 20 years (diagnosed)!. I remember when I was younger (undiagnosed), I thought I had been gifted with some special spiritual insight!. I was creative as hell & didn't need much sleep!.!.!.that was when I was manic!. I spent a lot more time (as the doctors say we all will w/age) in the depressive state so I am on 2 antidepressants (daily suicidal thoughts & 3 serious attempts)!.

I'm what is known as a "non-compliant patient" b/c I refuse to be on a lot of meds!. (I always read up on them to know their side effects & if it's worth it!.)

Personally, if I were you & you're feeling depressed, I'd find another p-doc!. In my opinion, the depression is much deadlier than the manic phase!. What I've learned from myself & others w/bipolar is that when we get "depressed", we can quickly go way down in the depths & that's when suicide can occur!. Of note, of all the psych disorders, statistically, bipolars have the highest suicide rate!.!.!.following right behind is anorexia!.

Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com
