Does depression mean you are NEVER happy?!

Question: Does depression mean you are NEVER happy!?
I don't know how to tell if you are truly depressed or if it's normal to be sad sometimes!. I know it's normal to be sad sometimes and happy sometimes and I am not sad ALL of the time so that is why it is so hard for me to tell!. I have times when I am quite happy and then other times when I am miserable!. I just lost someone very close to me about a month ago so I know that has something to do with the sadness, but it's more than just missing that person, I just don't feel as excited about life anymore!. I here people say that depression means that you can't get out of bed for three days and you want to kill yourself and stuff like that but that is not what I am experiencing!. It is a struggle to get up in the morning but I do it and I don't ever think about killing myself!. Ok I guess my question is how do I tell if this is normal or something more!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Absolutely not! I have had clinical depression for over 30+ years and before I was being treated there were times that I was happy, however the sad times far outweighed the happy times!. Also I found it difficult to do things or somethimes even function!.

Being that you just suffered a close loss that can also cause short term depression!. However from what you are describing it sounds more like clinical depression!. The key is that to have clinical depression you don't have to have ALL the symptoms all of the time!. Everyone is different and will have different symptoms!.

From the Mayo Clinic:
"Symptoms of depression include:

Loss of interest in normal daily activities
Feeling sad or down
Feeling hopeless
Crying spells for no apparent reason
Problems sleeping
Trouble focusing or concentrating
Difficulty making decisions
Unintentional weight gain or loss
Irritability
Restlessness
Being easily annoyed
Feeling fatigued or weak
Feeling worthless
Loss of interest in sex
Thoughts of suicide or suicidal behavior
Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches
Depression symptoms can vary greatly because different people experience depression in different ways!. A 25-year-old man with depression may not have the same symptoms as a 70-year-old man, for instance!. For some people, depression symptoms are so severe that it's obvious something isn't right!. Others may feel generally miserable or unhappy without really knowing why!."

I have included some links about Clinical (major) depression and you can take a look at them and see if the symptoms fit!. Maybe by checking out these sites you can get a better sense of whether your symptoms are normal or if you feel that you may need to seek treatment!.

I hope this helps!

Everyone is depressed once in a while, and people with depression are occasionally happy!. There's no such thing as a "three day rule" to tell if you're depressed, but I think you should speak to a professional about what you're going through!. It's entirely likely that you have a situational depression, rather than chronic depression, but you'll get over it much more quickly with professional help!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The past is not yet the past!. It is the force that has shaped the present and, if you are not careful, it will turn out to be the force that defines your future!. You keep referring to some experience which made a big impression on you long ago!. You are subtly allowing this to colour your judgement, prejudice your opinion and stunt your imagination!. You stand poised to achieve great things!. Before you can move forward successfully, though, you must first face (and beat) an old fear!.

good luck!!!

You could go to the doctor and ask!. No, depression doesn't mean you are never happy and you don't have to be suicidal to be depressed!. You said you lost someone, so you may just be grieving!. If you feel it could be more, than go speak with a doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The loss of a loved one takes time to heal!. The best advice I can give is to try to stay busy with friends and family you know who make you smile!. When feeling sad, go for a walk or watch a funny movie!.
Take care and don't give up!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would see a doctor!.!.!.

around this time last year I was going through some issues in my family and also a death of someone very close (paternal grandmother) not to mention being pregnant

I went to the psychologist and she diagnosed me as having major depressive disorder, however she didnt inform me of this at all!.

I found out when I was denied health insurance, and have since had to pay so much more for it because of this diagnosis

so be careful about that
it was a really messed up situation and I wasnt even depressed to begin with!.!.!. maybe just mildlyWww@Answer-Health@Com

well no- depression means that you cant get satisfaction from life!. o

hun don't worry hard times will pass!.

my freshmen yr of high school i lost my best friend since kindergarten because she commited suicide!.

but the pain goes away!. love and happiness comes back!.

Live for that person; breathe for them!.

don't listen to ppl!. they're stupid!. if you feel depressed dont let ppl tell you that you're not!

if you below the age of twenty, this is very normal due to hormones!.
and if your older, well, thats normal too because thats how humans think!.

just get out of the house :]
go for a walk; go on a trip!.
do something nice for yourself!!

idea-!
go buy a pet fish, and take care of it!.
that way all those nasty suicidal thoughts (or atleast most) will dissapear- because if ur gone who will take care of ur pet!? :]

don't worry, things will get better! never give up! :] hold your head high :]Www@Answer-Health@Com
