Has counselling or therapy helped you? how did it help?!

Question: Has counselling or therapy helped you!? how did it help!?
Answers:
Therapy has helped me a lot over the years!. I have been going on and off for the past 10 years!. During this time I have seen 7 different therapists (part of the reason was because I moved a couple of times)!. 4 of the therapists I saw were not a good fit for me at all!. One of them I saw for about 2 years but then towards the end realized that I really hadn't done much work during that time because my therapist wasn't a good fit for me!. The last two have been really good!. Once you find a therapist who is a good fit and who you feel comfortable with it is a lot easier to start doing the work you need to do!.
Therapy is a tool to help you work through issues and to help give you tools to deal with things on your own!. I think a lot of people go into therapy expecting that it's going to cure everything, but that's not how it works!. You have to go in with an open mind and a willingness to talk about things and explore the issues that need to be addressed!. You also have to be willing to try the things the therapist suggest!.
Therapy has helped me work through a lot of childhood trauma plus a rape that happened to me 5 years ago!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Counseling has helped me in five ways:

1!. It helped me to clarify the issues I was stuggling with!. In my case, it was separating grief/loss emotions from my father dying from anger issues from a mugging I had experienced!.

2!. There was a tremendous mental health benefit in simply telling someone else what was bothering me - something I was embarassed about!. Not having it as a secret was a tremendous weight off of me!.

3!. Counseling helped me to reframe my circumstances, and thus identify alternate ways of addressing my problems!.

4!. Counseling provided a "reality-check" for some of my concerns!. I'd lost my job and was afraid that I'd keep struggling to get new employment only to lose it!. My counselor was able to challenge that belief and get me to see that it was an irrational fear given my overall history and circumstances!.

5!. Counseling, in my case, got me correctly diagnosed with ADHD and an anxiety disorder!. This led to other behavioral changes and medication which further improved my quality of life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was in therapy when I was 16 and I feel it helped, the lady was a hippie and I think that helped!. She helped give me insight and ways to deal with what I was feeling, it was refreshing to know I was not the only one with my issues as i was led to believe!. Than a few years ago my husband and I went to couple therapy and that also helped have a neutral person hear both of us and let us know what we thought we were doing for each other wasn't really helping matters and it was determined he is OCD during our session so the therapist than helped me in ways of dealing with it instead of trying to change him!. So yes depending on your situation it may be helpful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I went to counseling for an extended period of time I can definitely say it was helpful in a number of ways!. The other poster is right in that going to someone who is objective and who has some professional expertise can help guide you towards insights that you may not have been able to see at the time!. I actually am a psychiatrist and went to counseling with a psychologist throughout much of my training!. From a professional standpoint, I think I learned more about the art of doing therapy sitting in the patient's seat on the couch than I ever did in my classes!. But that was just one part of it!. No matter how intelligent or insightful someone is, when you are conflicted or in pain, it is natural for one's mind to shut out or defend against things that we don't want to see!. In a way, its part of the mind's natural defense mechanism!. Some of these ways of coping work well when we are young but are less effective as we get older and these maladaptive ways of looking at or dealing with the world are much harder to see when we are doing the examining on our own, at least that was my experience!.

I think therapy has a lot to offer and I can't conceive of a situation in which it would not be helpful!. And trust me, that is coming from someone who spends (unfortunately) much of my day giving out meds, not doing therapy, so I theres certainly no incentive to promote it on my part other than the fact that I know it helps!. If nothing else, as I tell people, just sorting out those thoughts and feelings-getting them out and away from yourself so that you are not chewing on them or letting them chew on you-is helpful in and of itself!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Counseling helped me tremendously!. I was apprehensive at first, but it really helped me along with a change in my medication!. It helped to get my feelings out and talk with an impartial person!. It is hard sometimes even to talk with your loved ones because most of the time, they don't know what you are going through even when they are trying to be supportive!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am currently in counceling and I think it has helped me tremendously!. How it's helped!? Well, I was having many sleepless nights due to violent nightmares!. (I have post traumatic stress because of event that occured earlier in my life!.) From talking to her I don't have the nightmares anymore, I don't feel as anxious as I did and I'm just happier in general!. She has helped me to focus on the important things in my life!. Now, I've heard cases where it has not helped, but really it has a lot to do with the therapist!. If you go to the wrong person it's not going to help and it will give you a bad taste for therapy in general!. So my advice would be to try someone out!. Go a time or two and see if they feel right!. You'll know pretty quickly!. If not, go to someone else until you have a fit!. Good luck, and I would at least give it a try if I were you! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

I did some short term counseling when I was in college!. It did help me by helping me to focus on what was keeping me from developing strong relationships!. It also helped me to focus some frustrations was having with a friend and gave me some ways to talk to him and share my frustrations!. The tough part with counseling is that if you don't have a good counselor!.!.!.!.or one that fits your personality you may not get a damn thing out of the experience!. I've known some pretty lousy counselors!.!.!.fortunately for me, I had a good one!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Before going into psychoanalysis, I really had issues with my mother's decision to leave the class struggle and abandon the political commitments that her father (my grandfather) raised her to follow!. But I wasn't even aware of my resentment towards her over this, nor was I aware of just how important my grandfather's communist legacy was to me!. These were all unconscious issues for me at that time!. My original justification for going into psychoanalysis was because I was unhappy at my lack of worth in the job market (as a philosophy graduate), but now, by working through these unconscious issues with my mother, I have realised that the only way to claw back a sense of self-worth, the feeling that I am making a contribution to society, is to become the true inheritor of my grandfather's Marxism in place of my mother!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have been in counseling for 6 months now and still attending counseling i feel like it is helping me a little but i just need to open up more because i dont like talking about my problems i think once i pass that then counseling will help me 100% more try it !.!.!.it different for everyoneWww@Answer-Health@Com

I too had about 5 sessions they lasted about 45 mins each!. Half of the time was spent filling in surveys (circling the right answer for me) which then were added up and told me my level of depression!. I thought it was a stupid way!. She also made me read out sheets of paper and treated me like a kid and she made me feel guilty for being depressed by saying 'Oh you have a boyfriend, shouldnt u be happy then!?' She was weird!. I cancelled them they were not helping at all!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Just started therapy!. And yes it is helping!. For me it's be able to talk to someone who is not only educated but, who has a non biased opinion!. Since it is new for me, all I can say is that talking to someone who really wants to listen to what I have to say makes me feel good!. Will it cure my mental issues!? I'll have to get back to you on that!. But so far so good!

Take care and don't give up!Www@Answer-Health@Com

finding the right counselor can also be a hard thing to do, like finding a shoe that fits perfectly for you!. i do believe it helps me, as i don't have many other people to go to for my problems!. not all people feel the same way though, some will say it was just a waste of time/money and others it can help them through a whole lot of things knowing there is someone else that is there for them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have had counselling, only 5 sessions, but it definitely helped!.

Just having someone neutral to listen without judgement helped me get things clearer in my head!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
