My counsler is trying to get me on meds for depression should i do it ....?!

Question: My counsler is trying to get me on meds for depression should i do it !.!.!.!.!?
Answers:
i imagine it would do you a lot of good if you're actually depressed!.
but just remember this
if the medication isnt helping you out then you need to change it immediately!.
my dad takes several kinds of medications for depression bipolar and anxiety
he refuses to switch to new ones
because hes kind of addicted to the ones he has, even though they dont really help his depression any!.
hes so dependent on them its ridiculous!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Give it a shot!. Depression does not always need to be treated with meds and I would recomend getting to the route of why you are depressed before you jump in!. For instance if your depression is caused by a chemical imbalance (usually serotonin) then anti-depressants may help!. Many people exhibit depression symptoms and become depressed because they also have problems with Attention Deficiet Disorder!. Talk to your doctors about the possibility that you may also be A!.D!.D!. This is a "chicken or egg first" sort of battle because sometimes it is the depression that cause A!.D!.D!. or sometimes you legtimately get stuck with both!. Talk to your doctors about weather or not you exhibit symtoms for additional personality disorders like Bi-Polar disorder or Manic Depression!. These are important in pin pointing weather or not medication needs to be a perminent solution or just for a little while!. Can you/will you out grow the depression on your own!. Can it be over come with simply talking to a counsellor or making life-style changes!? Personally, I've so far been diagnosed with A!.D!.D!. and Depression and am being treated with Stimulants like Dexedrine and Riddaline!. These have never helped boost my moods but I am a lot more productive, longer attention span i!.e!. It's really a complex disorder to treat and is strictly a person to person case basis!. If your doc says to try 'em, then try 'em!. You can always stop taking whatever he gives you!. You can't always stop being depressed without assistence!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would try to get some natural methods first!. There are natural cures for everything out there, it just a little longer to work!. Most likely the side effects of the meds will cause other problems later on!. I took several different meds for a long time (3 years) they caused several different problems with me, including cancer!. I quit the medications cold turkey (although I do not recommend this to ANYONE, because it just about killed me) and I started several different detox programs!. Now, I feel great and I do not need medication!. I mean, you may NEED the medication, but make it a last resort!. Also, make sure it's temporary!. I would try something else first, it can't hurt!. And the medication will be there if it doesn't work!. Just remember, once you get on the medication, getting off of it can be almost impossible!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to take medications to treat depression, including the severity of the condition, whether you are taking medications for other medical conditions, and your feelings about taking medication!. Consider the following when making your decision:

* If your symptoms are mild and not recurring, you can try lifestyle changes and professional counseling alone to reduce symptoms or resolve depression!.
* Significant stress or changes in your life (such as divorce or being laid off from your job) can trigger depression (as opposed to temporary feelings of sadness or grief)!. See how to assess whether you might have depression!.
* If you need medications to treat depression, you don't need to be ashamed about taking them!. Depression is a medical condition, not a character flaw or weakness!. The medications will not alter your personality!.
* You can improve the quality of your life and your physical health by taking medications!. Untreated depression has been linked to the development of other diseases such as stroke and coronary artery disease!.
* If your condition gets worse while you are receiving professional counseling alone, medications can be added to your treatment!. Adding medications to professional counseling for severe depression works better than counseling alone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The decision is entirely yours!. If your counselor (not an M!.D!., I am guessing) won't see you without them and you don't wish to take them then find a new counselor!.

Personally, I think anti-depressants have their limits as far as usefulness!. There are better but more difficult and slower ways to beat depression!. Sometimes anti-depressants can be a useful part of treatment but when do you stop taking them!? (Studies have also showed that long term use will actually change the shape of your brain stem, and scientists don't know why or what the implications are!.)

If you are physically able, I recommend that you begin an exercise program!. You don't have to join a gym if you don't want to!. In addition to helping produce the right hormones that will help you feel more energized and motivated, setting fitness goals will give you something to reach for and something to feel really great about!. It's all about learning to believe again that you are worth it and you can do it!.

And sticking with counseling can be useful too!. How satisfied are you with your current counselor!? Not all counselors are the same!. I might find someone who specializes in personality disorders who uses talk therapy instead of meds!. I think this approach, while long and sometimes frustrating, will provide better resolution to your problems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i resisted meds for many many years
finally i crashed and burned, BUT now that i am on them it's the best darn thing i've ever done

some people will be on meds short term, while others (like me) will be on them permanently

i would ask your counsellor what the treatment plan looks like!. if they think you will be on it long term or short term!. either way if they are recommending it, i think it's probably cuz you need them

i hope you like and trust your counsellor
if you don't then get a new one and a second opinion

best of luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

since your counselor can not prescribe medicine you would have to see someone who can!. i'd recommend seeing a psychopharmacologist!. psychiatrist that specializes in medications!. doesn't mean you have to take them but this type of MD has the most detailed knowledge of these drugs!. Counselors are great for talk therapy ,if you like yours great, if not find another, the right counselor can make a world of difference! good luck!!!! ps meds have helped me immensely!.!.!.!.!.but not until i found the rightones from the right MDWww@Answer-Health@Com

if you have been with this counselor for a while and he/she feels that this could aid in your recovery it is worth a try!. but always start at a very low dose as you never know how your body will respond!. also, with meds such an anti-depressants be sure to tell a close friend or family member who is with you often so they can make sure you dont end up with negative side effects!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

you have to establish if you respect and trust your therapist!. if you dont !.!. then you need to change it!.
I suggest you are there cause you have an ailment of sorts!. Why not try the medication and if its no good, then stop it in about a month!.!. see if you feel better!.!. you probably will!. I suffered for a long time wish I knew to get on it earlier in my life i wouldnt have had so much trouble!.
you have to decide for yourself!. if you dont like it!.!. you can stop!.

listen to your counsolor she know's what she's doing!. mine did the same for me and it helps but, it's not just the meds it's you to!. i'm on 10mg of lexapro and it helps but, working hard with my counsolor is helful to!. actualy my counsolor told me when i met her in the physch or mhu in the hospital for being suicidal told me that if u have deoression issues and have been thu tragedies then counsoling wont work without the meds!. u need both!. good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would talk to my Dr!. and maybe even go to mental health of your local area and talk to somebody there!. Sometimes these pills make things worse they sure did for me!.

Look for alternatives as well if your asking questions here it means you are not sure that's good enough to explore options!.

I found for myself that meditation and mantra's did me far more good because they found the problem instead of masking it with drugs or pills!.

To each there own and I am not a professional so do not take my word for it ask your Dr and get a second op pinion ask questions and pick what is right for you because only you know the right answer!.

Good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com

I am very skeptical of getting on meds for depression, or any other thing for that matter!. I believe in excercise, eating healthy, and talking about your problems with people that care about you!. There is no magic cure for sadness, we all feel bad sometimes, we are not always going to be happy!. I've turned to eastern philosophy to cure my ailments!. They are more preventative, and honestly, it works!. When I first heard about it, I was like "yeah, right" but now I've seen how it's helped people, and I'm such an advocate!.

Its not a problem to take meds but make sure u dont get overdependent and also see how it feels after having it !.!.!.I suggest you to do Yoga and Meditation to deal with depression!.!.!.it helps to a good extent !.!.You can read some articles in blog related to depression!.!.you might find it helpful !.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you are depressed then yes!.!.alot of people have depression (i know alot of people might think that if your on meds your "crazy" but your not!.!.more people then you think are on meds!. Hope that helps!. Good Luck!
P!.S I think you should talk to your parents about it and go see a therapist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well you will need a visit to a doctor for a complete physical workup (to rule out anything physically wrong)!.!.then they may refer you to a therapist for depression!. But see a doctor first to rule out the physical aspects possiblity then go from there!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think maybe you should!. i dont know particularly why you need them but a consler is very knowledged an "anti-depressant" is used to prevent or treat clinical depression, so if ur unhappy or deprresed it should make you more happierWww@Answer-Health@Com

That's your personal choice!. However, if you truly want to get happy again then I suggest it!. Despite this, many of those drugs can be addictive or run high risks!. I would consider this, but the decision is yours!. It could help!. What's the harm in trying!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Only go on medication for depression if a doctor recommends it and you feel comfortable with it!.
I'm not a fan of anti-depressents because they didn't work for me, but I know people who it has worked for!.
Good LuckWww@Answer-Health@Com

do you truly feel depressed enough to use them because if not then i wouldn't!. people on meds actually tend to have suicidal tendencies and so they really don't help that much so i wouldn't do it without consulting a doctor firstWww@Answer-Health@Com

Yes!. It's nothing to be ashamed of- it's nothing you can help!. (chemical imbalance and all!.) I'd talk to a doctor, and your parents, and do it if everyone (or at least 2/3) THink it's a good idea!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Try and get something that has a generic form as well because it can get really expensive after a while!. Pay close attention to the side effects!. For example most people who go on Lithium don't see any results and also have severe weight gain!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!! You should not be taking medicine from someone who isnt a doctor! They can be drugs or something else!. Anything can be bad for your health if not used correctly!. So, if you wan thelp, you'd better go to a doctor or someone who really knows about this stuff!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Tell him to eat a D%$# you don't need pills - they aren't a cure they are a treatment!. the only cure is to find out what it is that is bothering you and find a way to fix it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
