I'm not an expert and just guessing here!. I think that becoming aware of situations that trigger it would be a good start!. From there, maybe you can avoid the extreme ones and slowly desensitize yourself to other less stimulating ones!.

Think about what's worked in the past!. That's usually a useful tool!. What helped you get to where you can handled the amount of stimulation that you can now!?

I have no idea if this idea is useful, but maybe you could get a small, easy to fit in your pocket locket or rock or something that you could use to focus on when it happens!. Ya know, something to center you like going into the bathroom but without having to literally go into one!. Idk!. It's an idea!.

Mostly what I think is that you will find the answers that work for you!. Keep asking the questions of yourself and others!.

PS - the MP3 is good, I've heard of that!. Another is gum - focus on chomping/cracking to drown out the noise while looking at only one thing!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

HI I don't have SID but I have problems with hearing things that I don't want to!. Is it possible to have a music player with you and just put the earplugs in your ear!. I do this to stop the voices!. The fact that you eat something crunchy which is also noisy makes me think that since it is noisy and you are controling the crunching you may feel out of control of the noises around you!. Maybe if you could keep an ipod with you and have it ready just incase you need it!. It could be like a safety net!. You might also keep like lifesavers that you can crunch on till you can reach a place where you feel safe!. I hope this helps!.

Maybe meditation would help!.
Ask your doctor and if he/she agrees, join a meditation group, or learn some basic techniques!. Look for simple, non-religious types of meditation, basically the kind that help you focus on your breathing and relax your body!. In buddhist tradition this is called "shamata", but you don't have to study buddhism to learn it!.
Later on, you will be capable to apply the technique when you are in overloading situations!.
And, of course, try to avoid these situations as much as possible!
Best of luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well never had to answer this from a childs question - normally Im giving advice to parents who have the kids!.

Ive read a few books which helped me so much with my child who has the same problems - he is 8 though!.

I read:

The out of sync child;
The explosive child

But Im not sure how much that can help you!.

Do you have an OT!? My son loves getting theraputic rubs, he plays with bristle blocks (VERY STIMULATING AND HELPFUL) he even jumps off high objects to get the much needed JOLT to fix his sensory issues!.

Def finding the theraputic "toys" or activities to keep you busy will truly help!. Talk to you parents about getting you to see an OT - and getting her/his advice for problem times!.

If you have things that make you feel better (saying eating a crunch bar !.!.!.take it with you for back up)!.!.!. learn to find ways to avoid situations which will most likely upset your situation!.

I dont know if any of this has helped but I certainly hope so!.

Good luck and hang in there!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sensory meltdown occurs because your brain is unable to filter out all of the static ans noise that all of us deal with on a daily basis!. You said that some music, movies, crunchy food etc!. help you out!? Well this makes sense!. These things give you something to focus on that allows you to drown out the rest of the crazy world!. So when you are feeling overwhelmed try and focus on one aspect of your senses!. For example: you are in a crowded mall and yuo hear alot of noises and see alot of people walking by; try and focus on only one noise (some music maybe) or look at only one object in the mall!. This will help you drown out the other distractions around you!. Some people find it helpfull to take an mp3 player with them so they can put on their headphones and completely ignore the noises around them!. Hope I was helpfull -AlanWww@Answer-Health@Com
