Answers:
First of all, "mentally deranged" isn't even in the dictionary!. It is a mixed term that can mean anything from psychopath to sociopath!. Second of all, which crimes would be included!? Burglary, theft!? If you are talking about Rape, Murder etc; I've covered that issue farther down!. Third of all, mental illness IS a disease and as such can not be legally disclosed to the public anymore than AIDs or any other disease!.

I have worked with mentally ill criminal offenders and I mean the nasty ones like sex offenders and murderers!. As it is, they face great obstacles in finding housing!. Also most are on parole and are supervised!. Many of the mentally ill offenders I worked with committed their crimes before they were diagnosed or while off of their medications!. Once properly medicated and receiving therapy, they were able to lead normal law abiding lives!. Including those that were considered Level I sex offenders; they usually committed their crimes while on drugs, psychotic or both!. In fact the level I sex offenders in most cases were horrified by what they had done and were the most remorseful!. The higher levels and most likely to re-offend varied greatly depending on their illnesses and in most cases Level 2 and higher sex offenders weren't mentally ill at all!. Whatever drove them to do what they did was not something that could be defined as a mental illness or successfully treated!.

Most criminals with major mental illness are not released to live on their own!. They are institutionalized or placed in residential facilities for long term treatment!.

There has been no statistical proof that Megan's Law protects anyone!. It has not deterred sexual offenses at all!. What has been shown is that the offenders are victimized and shunned; forced out of their homes, unable to find new places to live and good jobs!.

No, it is my not so humble opinion that the public has the right to know one's mental status, even criminals!. America was formed and based on freedom and should remain so!. I for one am sick and tired of our rights being stripped left and right everytime I turn around!. Its time the "public" and the Government mind their own business for a change!.

Sorry about the tirade, this is a hot button issue for me!.

Define major mental problems!.

See, I don't want this cut down to schizophrenia and bipolar!. The public won't go for depression, which also is neurologically based!. Would OCD be acceptable!? Yes, maybe!. How about anxiety!? Meh, probably not!. All this pick and choose, when the "mental illnesses" most associated with violence aren't the biological ones!. They are personality disorders!. Now here's where it gets interesting!. Almost everyone who commits a violent crime has one!. So, it's all a matter of whether there is a diagnosis or not!. Excuse me, I need to back up with an exception!.!.!. drunks and druggies commit violent crimes!. Should we exclude them from the list because, hey, they aren't mentally ill!.

Guess you already figured out that my answer is no!.

Anne had a personality disorder, btw, just as have nearly every psycho in every movie!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
