Does anyone know which kind of anti-depressants work best for constant bouts of !

Question: Does anyone know which kind of anti-depressants work best for constant bouts of saddness!?
Answers:
First of all you should talk to your doctor or a counselor to see if your sadness is just that or if it is a symptom of depression!.

If your constant bouts of sadness have been diagnosed as symptoms of depression, then anti-depressant medication may help!. So might counseling and/or behavioral changes!. If you and your doctor decide to try the medication route, there are three main classes of them and then a few in classes of their own!. The main classes are:

MAOI's (monoanamine oxidase inhibitors): very powerful, very effective, but with potentially fatal side effects caused by interactions with some foods!.

Tricyclics: older class of drugs, effective, but with major side effects and potential for fatal overdose!. Now used as sleeping meds more than anti-depressants

SSRI's (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)!. The most commonly used first line of treatment!. Includes drugs like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc!. Many people get relief from theses!. But there are a couple of things to bear in mind: they almost always cause side effects (these may include stomach/bowel upset, increase or decrease in appetite and weight, dizziness, sleepiness, sleeplessness, agitation, loss of energy!. loss of libido, delayed or absent orgasm!. There is also evidence that in a small percentage of people who are prescribed these drugs, their depression and/or suicidality may increase at least temporarily!. The big thing to bear in mind with SSRI's is that the side effects will happen almost as soon as you start taking them, but any benefit from the drugs may take a month or two to become evident!. The good news is that many people find that the side effects become less serious or go away altogether after a few days or weeks!.

Also quite a high percentage of patients do not get adequate symptom relief from the first SSRI they try!. In some cases, increasing the dose will help!. In others a switch to another SSRI will help!. Some people need the SSRI augmented with another drug and some people just don't respond adequately to SSRI's and need another class of drug!.

A couple of drugs from other classes: Wellbutrin (thought to work on dopamine)!. Some people get good results with it alone!. In others it is used to augment an SSRI!.

SNRI's (serotonin norepinenphrine reuptake inhibitors) e!.g!. Effexor!. Much like SSRI's but work on a broader range of brain chemistry!.

I can not stress enough that if you decide drug therapy is the right choice, you may need to try a few different approaches before you find a drug or drugs that work without causing intolerable side effects!. This can be trying because you already feel bad from the depression!. But that is where the state of psycho-pharmacology is today!.

One last point: if you go any of these meds, be sure to talk to your doctor before you stop taking them!. Many of them have very unpleasant side effects if you do do not come off of them very slowly!.

Best of luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I don't know any mental health specialists who would prescribe anti-depressants except, perhaps, for someone who was suicidal--and even then, only until they could get into some other kind of therapy!. (The family doctor might give you a prescription, thinking you won't be willing to go to therapy--but that's a little like getting false teeth because you might not be up to brushing the ones you have!.) If you have had a major loss of any kind (death of child, parent, spouse; break-up with partner, job loss or major accident) your grieving and sadness might go on for a year or year and a half!. That would be totally natural!. If you are just sort of a melancholy person, you probably need to do therapy!. Regressive therapy is sometimes particularly helpful!. And exercise is always good for lightening your mood, even if you are in therapy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
