I have a 'friend' who i really don't like-so maybe i shouldn't call her a friend!. She always seems to need to be in the centre of attention and is just a horrible person in general (well to me anyway)!.
A couple of years ago she 'self harmed' infront of our group of friends!.
I've self harmed for years and only one person has ever known about it and they only found out fairly recently!. The thing that confuses me is that what i do is very privite and extremly well hidden from everone!.!.and has been for ages!. Even when i first did it when i was 11/12 yeaers old i was able to hide it from teachers, friends and family!.
So what i just can't understand atall is why would she do it so obviously infront of everyone!? A cry for help, attention!?

The vast majority of people who self-injure keep it carefully secret!. Those who, like your friend, do it in public, generally do want "attention"--but here's the important thing: If they are that desperate in looking for attention, they probably need it!.
Your friend seems like someone who defines herself by the relationships she has, and isn't quite sure who she really is without them!.!.!. so she is desperate to keep people close, desperate for emotional support, afraid of losing them!. The problem is that she isn't really going about it the right way, and probably is actually pushing people away!.!.!.
I do think she probably needs to talk to someone about this--not because she self-injured (statistically, one in eight people will try it by the time they're in college), but because she is desperate enough to do such dramatic things in public!. If she doesn't talk to someone about this problem, she could really ruin her reputation!.!.!.
By the way, good luck with your own SI habit!. Do try to find other ways to cope!.!.!. it's really only a temporary solution!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It sounds like maybe she did it for attention!. In my experience, self-harm is not something one shows off but instead they hide it like you said!. It may be a cry for attention, but in any case she needs some serious help!. She's probably not really a self-harmer but definitly needs help about needing attention so badly!. Hopefully you can convince her to talk to someone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
Yes she may have done it for attention!. But she may have needed that attention to get herself help I am thinking that she knows that she in this way beyond her control and knows that she needs outside help!. This may have been her only way to seek the help that she needs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
She probably did it for attention, but if she did it in front of everyone, then she might also be crying out for help too!. Self harming yourself isn't a good idea at all, it can lead many more severe problems!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I recently (January) quit cutting!. One of the last times I did it was during a choir practice, singing a song with the choir, I was so close to the girl next to me our elbows were touching and I started scraching and didn't stop until I bled!. I wanted to see if I would get caught!. More importantly, I wanted to see if anyone would notice and care enough to stop me!. To this day it terifies me that though my arm was bleeding right there, no one saw it!. Or, if they did they didn't say anything!.
It could be different with your "friend" but when I cut I felt like a balloon with no one holding onto my ribbon!. I felt as though the smallest burst of wind could blow me away and no one woud even care that I was flying away IE: slowly killing myself!. I did it where and when I did it because I wanted to know how safe (or lack there of) I was and, to be perfectly honest the realization that I could cut while elbow to elbow with one of my best friends and no one in a room of 12 people noticing me was not the best feeling!.
