Why are doctors so quick to push antidepressants onto you?!

Question: Why are doctors so quick to push antidepressants onto you!?
Even if you don't want them, and tell them so!?
I'm 20 now and it's happened quite a few times, the first when I was 16 (I can't believe they prescribed them to a teenager with sleep problems!!!) and I took one and it scared me so much!. Why are they so eager to prescribe medication instead of counselling!? Why is no one expected to actually deal with their issues, why would they rather just sedate your brain!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
A lot of reasons!.

Doctors are trained to fix medical problems!. That means tests and writing prescriptions all day long!. They do referrals to specialists but know most don't want to see psychiatrists, and they also think they can fix depression with a pill just as easily!.

A lot of ppl don't want counseling, otherwise they would have gone to a counselor instead of their GP!.

Some doctors might be afraid of being sued if the person attempts or commits suicide after the doc just told the person to go to therapy instead of writing a prescription!.

Insurance usually doesn't cover counseling so a lot of ppl can't afford it!.

A lot of doctors don't think counseling solves the problem as well as pills!.

A lot of doctors are influenced by big pharma!.

Probably more reasons!.

Personally, I think prescribing antidepressants to anyone before trying therapy is a big mistake!. Quite often it's caused by insufficient coping skills to deal with a situation!. Improve the skills and their won't be a problem in the future!. Mask the real problem with antidepressants and the depression will return when need for the skills arises again!. If therapy doesn't adequately help, or help is needed in order for therapy to be effective, then the therapist can help the person figure that out as well as the right type of doctor to get a prescription!.

Btw, when you really do need antidepressants and are on the right one, it does not sedate your brain once your body acclimates!. Or, so I'm told!. I have bipolar!. They all make me crazy!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is not a recommendation that you do not see a doctor or take prescribed medication!.!.!.!.!.!.!.But have you ever thought of being responsible to some degree for your own health, by what foods you eat and exercise you do, the amount of sleep you get daily, and limiting your computer and television time, going for walks or just being outside for half hour every day!? I know some have a chemical imbalance and need medication!.!.!.I just get tired of people blaming others for their illness!.!.!.!.!.obese blame fast food and fashion magazines for instance!. We need to take responsiblity for our own health is all I'm trying to say!. If you don't like your doctor's diagnosis or prescription, go see another doctor and do some research on your own!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I started with counseling, and was told to see my doctor to rule out any physical causes for my insomnia!.
Back to the counselor where I had a complete breakdown!.
Back to my doctor and she got me started on Lexapro 10mg!.it helped some, but I started to have suicidal thoughts again, and this time they looked so damn good to me!.
Then it was 20mg and they started to go away!.
Once the suicidal thoughts were stopped by the drugs I could talk to my counselor better and start to change my life!.
I went off them for a couple of months (psychiatrist said it would be ok!.) but my sleep vanished and my mood worsened!.
I need my brain "sedated" in order to make the changes that will improve my life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Reputedly they receive kick-backs from the pharmacutical companies!.

And meds are often much cheaper than alternatives such as CBT!.

But not all doctors are the same!. Phone round a few and explain the situation!?

Whether or not you do, the advice above regards lifestlye is worth considering!.

Incidentally, I found SSRIs to be unsuitable and am now content, having changed type!.

because most patients prefer the meds!. I am the same, I try to avoid any meds if I can!. I found a doctor who understands this and he will try other methods at all cost before trying meds!. If you don't feel comfortable with your doctor and don't feel you are getting the attention you need, search until you find one you like!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

2 main reasons:
1!. The drug companies vastly inflate their drug's alleged effectiveness through burying studies and pretending tests are double-blind when they aren't:

2!. GPs generally have no idea what else to do in the 8 mins they get to see you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
