Question: I am on meds for depression, would this go against me if i wanted to foster children!?

Hi

As someone who suffers from depression and also has a family member who fosters I can tell you what I know from personal experience!.!.!.!.!.!.!.

Unfortunately my Local Authority will not accept anyone to either foster or adopt if they have been,or who are, on medication for this type of illness!.

I suppose it is possible that things have changed, but I very much doubt it!.

I would suggest that you ask your local Fostering or Adoption team within the Local Authority where you live!.

Sorry if this isn't the answer you were looking for, but you need to know what you could be up against, and it's far better to make enquiries now and get the correct answer before getting your hopes up!.

Take care and good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It really would depend on the reason why you are on anti depressents, how long you have been on them, and if you are intending to stay on them!. Before you are appoved as a foster carer everyone needs to have a medical and your GP will state whether or not they feel you could foster!. The decision wouldn't be made only on this but it would be taken into consideration!. I would advise that you disclose this at the initial stages, so that the agency or local authority are aware of this from the start!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

as long as you're taking your medication and seeing your psychiatrisr--then i don;t see why you cannot foster children!. you know how much control you have and, i think this is a wonderful thing to want to do!. good luck;god bless

I think you have to get a letter from your GP saying that you're ok!.!.!.I'm not sure though!.

I have a history of depression and when I worked at a nursery, I had to get my GP to write a note saying I was ok to work!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I think it would but I would speak to your GP about this - he will have a better idea of the best thing to put in a letter for you!.!.!.that is, if the depression won't interfere with you fostering kids!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This depends on the severity of your depression and future prognosis!. You're best bet is to have a chat with your GP if you feel comfortable enough to do that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to ask someone at your local social services dept!. The recruitment process for foster carers is pretty rigorous though and your health would be one of the things taken into consideration!.

You should have a chat with someone like your GP about this as they would know better than anyone!.Helping kids by fostering them may make your depression lessen!.
