I am not a doctor and this is my personal, but studied opinion, with some real life experience!.!.!.!. Any doctor that is diagnosing a child of ten with bipolar disorder should have his or her head examined!. RUN, don't walk, run!. Any good psych will admit that talk therapy is the best!. It's just more intense and it take a real commitment from the parent(s)!.
Exercise, proper nutrition including a premium quality supplement (raisinhale!.com) will do wonders!. The only thing meds do is MASK the symptoms!. I am sick and tired of docs with their God Syndrome attitudes thinking they actually have a 'cure'!. One question, if these meds work why do we have more and more people on them!? No one is getting cured, we are creating a new drug culture!. It's just that the junkie can go to a Pharmacy to get his fix or cure!. Same problem as black market drugs, but more insideous as they are used under the guise of social acceptance and medical veracity!. BS!. Get to a holistic MD!. Someone practiced in modern medicine but not to educated to think the cure is always in a prescription!.
Google these guys!. Dr!. Ray Strand!.!.!.!. Dr!. Christine Woods!.
and some more links!. Ablechild!.org!. (fighting the systematic drugging of our children) EDUCATE YOURSELF! Don't listen to just one person, there IS a better way!!! Get your innocent child off these chemicals with a GOOD doctor!. There is a better way, I don't know what it will be for you but don't stop untill you find it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Not an expert on peds psych meds, but I've heard of Abilify being used!. Risperdal often is the first one they try, btw, at least from what I've gathered!. Personally, I'd rather give the anticonvulsants a shot, but that's me!. I think they are much better for adult bipolar, but there are some differences between adult onset and the childhood disorder!.

A good site on psych meds from the user perspective is http://www!.crazymeds!.us Sometimes there are parents of bipolar kids posting on the boards!. Just keep in mind that the ppl on the site are the ones having problems w/meds!. Those who don't usually aren't seeking out info!.

There are other medications that can be attempted!. One such medication is Lithium!. However I've read that it only works 50% of the time with children!. Anti-convulsants are used as mood stabilizers, such as Depakote, Topamax, and Trileptal!. Other medications similar to risperdal that may help bipolar depression are zyprexa, seroquel, geodon, or abilify!. Abilify recently got approved for bipolar disorder in children and teens!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
