How can I help accept the fact that I will always be on meds?!

Question: How can I help accept the fact that I will always be on meds!?
It's tought to swallow because 3 years ago, I was perfectly fine!. Then I just started acting up and was diagnosed with ADHD, then depression followed!. For the first time in 2 1/2 years I went off my meds after trying several with bad side effects!. Depression returned!. Today I start back on the one with no side effects that only does about 75% of the job!.
I'm feeling down because I know I will always have to take it and I will not ever be my old self!.
Any tips for accepting that and moving on and and trying to make the best of what there is!?
Please no try more meds answer!. I've done that enough (it's been hard on my body) and my doctor and I feel it's time to cry uncle!.
Thanks very much!Www@Answer-Health@Com

i know its not nearly as severe, but i had issues with birth control for the longest time!. its just kind of a weird concept that youre ALWAYS "on" some kind of chemical!. and esp!. one that alters your perception/personality, i can imagine its difficult to accept!. although meds do help, never underestimate the powers of your own mind!. it can do powerful things in the way of mental "health"!. sometimes happiness/contentment/peace is like exercise: you dont really want to put forth the effort at first and it seems difficult!. but once youre doing it you feel a lot better and actually enjoy it!. i find it is similar!. push yourself to do activities which do bring/have brought you pleasure, try new experiences, travel, volunteer!. keeping busy doing positive things and seeing tangible results with every action can be uplifting over time!. also, exercising is great for overall mental health!. you feel better doing regular cardio, and youll look healthier too on the outside, which can only energize the inside!. volunteering has a way of breaking peoples' hearts while bringing them a great appreciation for what they do have as well!. i hope something has helped!.!.!.good luck to you!

As you keep taking the medication, you will gradually not give it much thought!. After you swallow them, be on your way!.
Do everything you do each day!.
I have been taking medications since 1984!.
I know they help me feel better!.
I would hate to imagine what I would be like without these medications!. Try to remind yourself about this as you swallow them each day!. Best Wishes and I hope you feel the best that you can!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know its very hard to accept and can relate totally!. I was first on medications when I was 3 years old for allergies and am still on prescription medications for them!.

It is something that will take time!. I don't know how old you are, however I am 43 years old and have been on prescription medicine of some kind for 40 years and know that I will be on medications the rest of my life!.

I started anti depressants and anti anxiety medications when I was 20 years old and am also now on medications for fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses!.

When I get down about being on medications the rest of my life; I try to think of my quality of life!. There was a time where I had to go off all my medications as I was trying to get pregnant and for 7 months that I was off my medications life was a living hell for me!. In fact at the end I ended up in psych ward!

Now I am on 13 different medications and know that my life is happy and worthwhile and a lot of that has to do with the medications I'm on!. The medications I will be on the rest of my life!.

It is hard to accept that you need to be on medications the rest of your life, I would never deny that!. However diabetics are on insulin all their lives and people that have organ transplants are on medications the rest of their lives too!.

As I said before it will take time!. However if you give it time and realize that your life is really better because of the medications that should help!. Also keep in mind what life is like for you when you aren't on the medications!. That is what has helped me accept it!.

I hope I've helped you at least a bit!.

Take care,

Outside of meds, I can only suggest things which have worked well for me!.

Humour!. (laughter really is the best medicine)

Massage- can help so much to make you feel more relaxed in the stress of the world!. Touch can make a lot of difference and to know that you're taking time out for yourself is priceless!.

Meditation- try just sitting on a chair, legs uncrossed, sitting up!. Put your hands on your legs (thigh area so its comfy) and close your eyes!. Take a deep breath in for 5 seconds slowly through your nose, then out through your mouth for 7 seconds also slowly!.
- continue for a couple of minutes and you'll find yourself instantly calmer!.

Sit out in the sum for 10 minutes; this really does help with depression (think light therapy) your body produces seretonin when exposed to sunlight which improves your mood!.

Hug someone and let them hug you!. (again we're back to the touch thing :) )

Chocolate (in moderation) helps with the seretonin thing!.

Write everything down you're feeling onto a piece of paper;
(yes really; all that, 'i hate me, i hate the world, the world sucks, i want to get off, im not good enough, whats the point!.!.!.')

Then RIP IT UP!!! or alternatively,
BURN IT!!!
or both

:D

(note: im not advocating pyromania at this point)
it really does release some of the tension and stress!.

above all, carpe diem (seize the day) I know its hard, but try and look at life with the perspective that youre a long time dead so have some fun!.

Make a list of all the crazy weird and wonderful things youve never done and always wanted to do!.!.!.
eg!.this is the start of my list

1!.)Sky diving
(however, if at first you dont succeed, skydiving isnt for you!.)

2!.)Horse riding

3!.)A gigantic art piece on an A1 canvas

4!.)etc etc!.

I really hope this helped!.

p!.s!.oops, i forgot to add in exercise!.
Try bike riding, or swimming or something to that effect!.!.!. it helps!.!.honest!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You don't know for sure that you'll be on meds forever - just because this is how you are now doesn't mean this is how you'll be in 10 yrs time!.
And if you are it doesn't mean the end of your life!. You wouldn't believe some of the people that I've treated in my 20 yr career in mental health!. People with responsible, high paid jobs and even a couple of celebs (confidentiality prevents naming of course)!. So it's not the end of the world, although I know it's hard to accept!. But would you feel the same way if you were diabetic or epileptic and had to take medicine every day to stay well!?
You will regain some of your former self, although you probably won't ever feel quite the same again!. Many people who go through mental health problems come out feeling stronger, or more sensitive to others, or feel they have a new outlook on life and their priorities have changed!. It doesn't all have to be negative!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i know exactly how you feel!.!.!.in the past few years i have been on and off so many different meds!. most of them gave me side effects i couldn't deal with, others just simply didn't work!. hang in there and you will find the right medication!. it took my mom about 5 years or so to find the right meds/combo of meds to do the trick!. sometimes there is just nothing you can do about being on medication!. for the one medication you say has no side effects, but only does about 75% of the job, there is probably another medication that can help with that last bit!.!.!.tho it may take time to find!.!.!.there are many medications out there!.

you don't say whether you're seeing a counselor on top of taking the meds, but i know for me just having someone i could talk to about things, whether they're good or bad things, helped a lot!. just someone with and unbiased veiw if i needed advise, or just needed to vent!.!.!.not necessarily becasue i had issues i needed to work out!.

good luck and i know you will find the right solution!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know what you mean!. I've been on allergy meds for 30 years, but those are different!. I can put them off until I feel miserable!. I have some control there and they come with immediate relief which makes me immediately grateful!. Psych meds are very different!. I have bipolar disorder, diagnosed about two years ago!. I take a fist full of pills, some of which I know can cause internal organ damage over the years!. Like you, I am not completely 100% but very close!. They make a huge difference and I would not give them up!. But, still!. They are meds for life!.

I accept these pills every day in two ways!. The biggest is by knowing that I would not survive w/o them!. I'm hoping to soon get over this because it is not a thing I want to remember everyday! I think that is the part that I hate most about the meds!. It is a constant reminder!. I try to remind myself that many ppl have illnesses that require daily meds and that it doesn't matter what the illness is!. It is what it is!. Another thing is that the meds are integrating into my daily routine!. I'm hoping this becomes far more automatic w/o thought!. Last, therapy helps in accepting the illness and the stuff that comes with it!.

Although you didn't ask for med advice, I'm gonna throw something out there anyway!. Have you looked into Omega 3 fish oil!? Recent studies show that 1-2 grams of the EPA ingredient is as effective as 20mg of Prozac!. The two work even better together!. I can't take antidepressants w/o going a bit crazy, but this stuff helps me a lot!.

PS - You will probably refind yourself!. If not, always keep in mind that as a person, you are ever changing!. Even w/o your illness you would change!. No one is ever static!. Getting hung up on the idealism of who you once were (eventually it will become idealism because that is the way memory works), will not serve you well!. Focus on what you have today and where you can go in the future!. Partial symptoms may be there now, but there is nothing to guarantee that they always will be!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

if you can afford it, go to a naturopath - there are natural treatments for ADHD and maybe you don't even have ADHD!.
If you have depression , Omega 3 is very good for depression and has no side effects , it is good for alot of things, natural treatment are not expensive and sometimes you can get a 2 for 1 deal
good luckWww@Answer-Health@Com
