I have a grandson that is now 7 and he was born with Hydroceplus and mild cerebrel palsy!. Hydroceplus is fluid on the brain, (on the left side of his brain) so therefore his motor skills on his right side do not work as well and his right hand is only a helper hand!. His right leg drags just alittle but you can't tell him that he has a diability, because he will try anything you put in front of him!. His brain works fine and he is above average in everything, except his motor skills!. If you ask him if he was disabled, he will tell you no!. He just has to find other ways to make things happen!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have epilepsy and my mom has an auto immune disorder for which she has to have blood infusions every 2 weeks!.!. I'm affected by living in an area where the public transportation sucks and I can no longer drive because of the frequency of my seizures!.!. I have not been able to hold a job since getting epilepsy!.!. I have wet myself, luckily, only once during a seizure and my mom has had accident's as well as a side effect of the infusions!.!. luckily, all at home!.!. My mom is still working although they seem to go after her more for missing days even though there documented by a dr!. she tends to have a hard time with her boss!.!. As time continues on I've learned to adapt better to having seizures and they are not as frequent as they used to be!.!. I'm seeking disability in hopes of using it to move to a city with good public transportation so I can work again!.!. the high cost of my medications (over $800 a month for just one of them) forces me to go through the free clinic for assistance since I have no insurance!.!. Are you asking because you have recently become disabled or someone you know has!? Are trying to understand and cope with it!? If the answer is yes, there are many support groups and websites with info on how to learn to live with a condition and how to adjust to a friend or loved one's condition!.!. I know when I was 1st diagnosed I used to visit the forum's on the epilepsy foundation site to learn to cope with friends being scared to hang out with me and just meeting others with similar problems helped me out a lot!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am disabled!. Due to Poly Rheumatic Myalgia, ostio arthritis, and having broken my back I am in constant pain!. I worked as a nurse for 32 years!. I am no longer able to work!. I can not do major house work!. I can not pick up my grandchildren!. I get depressed when I can't do every day things!. I feel less than human!. People can't see my pain or inability to move certain ways and I am glad, but I feel as if they are judging me because of the things I don't do!. I am blessed to have a very supportive family!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know a great number of people who have disabilities - I am a caregiver for developmentally disabled adults!. The folks I care for have a wide range of conditions, from mental retardation and autism to psychological disorders, including anxiety disorders and dimentia!. To answer your questions about all of them would take hours!. Some of them will be able to learn the skills they need to have an apartment of their own, and live independently - some of them need help for the simplest things, even getting dressed and taking a bath!. Several of them have jobs - like helping at a day care, or shredding confidential papers at the local courthouse, or cleaning at motels!. The rest of them go to a day program that often has some work that they can do and get paid by the piece - for instance one of these day programs runs a greenhouse, and they pack seeds into seed packets, or tend the plants in the greenhouse!. Other jobs they might do this way include packaging nuts and bolts and screws and nails!. Next time you are at a hardware store, look at that part of the store - perhaps some of those packets you are looking at were counted out and sealed at a workshop like folks I am a caregiver for work at!. These day programs let them have plenty of breaks, and they can play games and have a snack, get some exercise, or work on crafts for fun in between doing their piece work!. These work areas are staffed with people who have First Aid/CPR training, and know how to administer medications, to help guide the handicapped people there and keep them safe!. Yes, some of them are incontinent - some of them need help to use the bathroom all the time, and some of them just have accidents once in a while!. I love working with these people because I can use my sense of humor to make them happier!. But some days I get hit or bitten!. The worst kind of day at work is when someone gets sick and they have to go to the hospital!.

My mother has post-polio syndrome and degenerative spinal arthritis!. She worked until she was 67, and then retired!. She can walk short distances with a cane!. For long distances, she uses an electric scooter!. She lives on her own, but the family help her by doing laundry and cleaning!. I don't live anywhere near her, so none of this really affects me, except when my sister or sister-in-law complain to me!. I talk with her on the phone, and that is nice!.

My boyfriend's cousin is on disability - I believe he got on it due to a back injury!. He was able to get back to work for a short time after recovering from that - then he had a stroke!. Just as he started getting better from that, he had some heart trouble!. He used to be a mechanic, and I think he really enjoys the puzzles that fixing cars can create!. But of course, with a bad back, that is not a good job for him!. He still works on his own cars, and tries to help my boyfriend with his, but lately with the heart trouble, he has been very exhausted, and can't do as much!. A lot of times, he will talk my boyfriend through a repair, lending his knowledge to a situation, and having my boyfriend do the hard physical work for it!. He also is a very depressed person, and it is not easy to talk to him sometimes!.

I have a friend who has asthma and a psychological problem!. She is working very hard at college!. She sometimes has to spend a lot of time in the hospital, so she often has to ask for extensions for writing papers!. But her professors have gotten to know her - that she is very hardworking, and will turn in excellent work when she is healthy enough to complete the assignments!. She works part time as a tutor, helping freshmen learn how to write better papers!. This is a good choice of work for her, as she is good at writing, and good at helping others to write better - but also it has a very flexible schedule, so she can work around those times when she is too sick to work!.

One of my coworkers says he is disabled - that he has anxiety disorders and depression!. He does not show up to work, does not follow the proper procedure for calling in sick, does not cooperate with our supervisor when he is at work, has walked off of a shift and lied about the reason why!. He does not understand why the company will not allow him to drive the company vans, after all, he does not have to check in at the police station for a breathalyser test every four hours anymore!. I think when he does not show up for work it is because he is too drunk!. And yet, they won't fire him!. But to be honest, I prefer it when he does not show up to when he does, even if it means I have to do all his work, because he has an unpleasant attitude, and I do not like working with him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
