Why is most of the advice in the mental health section this way?!

Question: Why is most of the advice in the mental health section this way!?
It seems like a lot of the answers given in this section are based on the same principal, "get over it and be happy!."

Do people not understand that for a lot of people with mental health issues, it is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain!? Take me for example!. I am bipolar and am in a depressed phase right now!. Telling me to be happy or get over it does nothing!. I know I'm depressed, I know I hate feeling this way but telling myself to "buck up" doesn't work for me!.

I just read a question where the answer is obviously go get help now before you harm yourself, but most are telling them to be happy and think of her family!.

Does anyone agree with me!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I agree!. Most people don't understand it's not something you can control by simply being happy, or else there wouldn't be any people with mental health problems! Alot of times, even when you do go to the doctor - the pill isn't going to completely *fix* the problem!. People just don't understand!.

I was surprised myself!. I am a medical student and my boyfriend is bipolar!. I have had many suggestions to leave before I get hurt- by people who are in the health care field! He's not dangerous! He just needs someone with patience and love to stand by him no matter what!. I can't just tell him to be happy!. Even with medicine, we have tried so many different things!.

There needs to be a different approach, that's for sure!. I'm sure telling someone to just be happy makes them feel more out of control than they already are!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with you completely!. People who are lucky enough to be "perfect", do not understand what others are going through!. If they could only walk a day in our shoes!. We are strong!. I know alot of people that couldn't handle a manic stage of Bi-Polar!. I know that a depressed stage would definitely do others in!. You've got to admit we are a lot stronger than "normal" people are!. Or maybe they too have a disorder, but don't want to say anything about it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i completely agree with u!.i am a mental health professional, i just joined the yahoo answers today, and i have already reported 3 answers which were insensitive, rude and insulting in the mental health section!.
but, we need to remember that this is an open forum, people who put serious questions here run the risk of getting answers which make them feel worse off than they were before!.!.!.so the best we can do is, report answers which are not appropriate- and hopefully before the person concerned sees it!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree!. People just don't understand!. My dad asks me, "What are you depressed about!?" and I have to explain every time that it is a medical condition!. I feel for you!. I've just gotten over a really bad depression!. Just have patience with the medication and trust that God will see you through!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i agree with you!.!.!.its not that easy to do!? and i deal with depression as well and the only way i can get past it is to throw myself into things that really matter to me!.!.!. but even then its a struggle!. hang in there girl and good luck!!!!!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree, because my dad suffered with depression for most of my childhood so I know first hand that telling someone to just be happy and think of your family doesn't always help!.

My dad tried his hardest to get out of his "really down days" and be there for us, but it wasn't untill he got professional help that things started to look up!. He still has those days but they are no where near as bad as they used to be!.

So people who have never been clincally depressed or mentally ill or around someone who is/was should not answer questions in the mental health section!. They could never really understand all that is involved!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I agree with you!. I have a sister in law who was happily married, had 3 beautiful daughters, and was getting counseling and taking antidepressants, and she still committed suicide!. No amount of get over it, and get happy is going to help a depressed person get over depression!. It has to be treated with counseling and medication in most cases, the same as bi-polar disease, and many other mental illnesses!.

Those who say get over it and be happy, have obviously never suffered from severe depression!. If they have never been depressed, then they are clueless, and don't have the capacity to understand!. so they really shouldn't even be answering the question if they don't have something constructive to add!. I'm sure the person bringing the question to Y/A is asking for real help, not just people saying get over it, and not offering any viable solutions!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
