Answers:
I too am bipolar and certainly chuckle at the number of ppl who come on here looking for a diagnosis!. It's as if ppl have forgotten that everyone is different and that personality disorders are extremes of regular human characteristics!. As for mental illnesses, so often some good therapy and self-help can deal with what are normal reactions to tough circumstances!. Instead it seems that many want the label as you say!. I don't get it, but I imagine it's because ppl only know their own pain and also aren't aware of how severe it has to be before the problem actually is a mental illness!. Personally, I'd give anything to give mine away!

And, yeh, contrary to what some believe, a bipolar diagnosis does rule you out of a few jobs like being a cop or astronaut!. Fortunately, there are few of those jobs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Last time I checked, it is illegal for them to force you to disclose this information!. Meaning, this information is private medical data, and when they ask it on the application, you can simply put no without any recourse!. The reason is simple!.!.!. Because they are not legally able to verify the information!.!.!.

In short, with a little simple legal advice you are still good for that dream job of yours!.!.!.!. My advice would be to shoot for the stars and see where it lands you!.!. Just please always remember that life is about the journey, and not the destination!.!.

Good Luck and I Hope this Helps!.!.!. :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yeah thats horrible!!! i have a disease like that and i would hate if i couldnt have a job i wanted because of it! thats discrimination! im really sorry u cant have ur dream job
i bet ur gonna find a job u love that will allow u good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

if they won't hire you soley on the fact that you're 'bipolar', not taking anything else into consideration, then that's discrimination plain and simple!. Write a letter to your mayor or governor about it, send a duplicate email!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience of handing out a variety of diagnoses from the American Psychiatric Association's "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders" (now retired), I wholeheartedly agree with the first part of your question which addresses people who diagnose themselves, or assume that they MUST be mentally ill!. I get so totally frustrated, or amazed, or dumb-founded at people here on Answers who say they or someone they know MUST BE OCD or ADD or ADHD or Manic or any number of the popular or "latest" fad diagnoses when they haven't a CLUE as to what that diagnosis includes!. And, I'll tell you "on-the-side" that the American Psychiatric Association is heavily influenced politically as to what characteristics they include or don't include in any diagnosis, or which diagnoses they keep around and which ones they eliminate, or which new ones they suddenly come up with!. I was in business way too long and saw too many versions of the DSM come out with various changes in diagnostic criteria, or whether something is diagnosable or not, to have much faith in it any more, so, it's a popular guide to go by, but, for anyone to place their life on any given diagnosis is completely absurd, unless you're desperate that is!. God Bless you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have also been a mental health professional for 22 years since 1986 and no it does not frustrate me that people are inquiring about a possible disorder that they have!. I am somewhat suprised that people are frustrated with this!. I don't see a trend of hypochondrosis on here!. I don't think people are looking for attention, I think they are looking for answers to why they have difficulties in certain areas!. I would expect that they are following up with a medical professional!. I do believe that a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous without being seen by the appropriate specialist!. If I suspect a disorder or get a diagnosis I research it myself too!. I realize that like most people working in mental health that I am an odd duck and have my share of issues as well so idk, maybe its part of my issues!. I agree with the above answer that the DSM is an interesting guideline not to be taken too seriously!.
I think that the jobs that would disqualify you for having bipolar isn't really an issue because those jobs are not suited for someone with a mood disorder!. You have to use common sense when choosing an occupation in order to be successful in it!. Picking a job like a police officer where you work shift work, long hours (not good for insomnia which accompanies mania), high stress level (not good for anxiety which most bipolars have) doesn't make a lot of sense!. Also police officers have an incredibly high divorce rate (that instability is not good for someone with a mood disorder)
Fact is a lot of people would like to be lawyers and doctors but just can't handle the academics, same difference, life isn't fairWww@Answer-Health@Com
