Perhaps you are thinking of SSI/SSDI (rather than a pension, which is more like a retirement benefit)!.

People with schizophrenia are not necessarily eligible for SSI/SSDI ("disability" benefits)!. If their condition is well managed with medication, many may be quite able to hold down a job (and many do)!. If their condition does render them unable to work (this is true for some folks with schizophrenia), then they would be eligible at that point!.

My mother was awarded disability, not a pension!. She had to go through a whole court hearing and application process!. The funny thing was, though, she thought it was for fibromyalgia, not her mental disorder!. Even today, she still thinks that is why she is on disability!. They said she wasn't mentally able to work!. She gets about $800 a month right now, and used to get and extra $150 each for my sister and I!. She has also always had rental assistance (we grew up poor), so that helps her out too!. By the way, she is paranoid schizophrenic!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Only if they are labeled as "disabled" and assigned a disability percentage!.!.!. And trust me, you do not want to get labeled as disabled unless you absolutely have to!. It will stick with you for life!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
